A critical appraisal of clinical practice guidelines on surgical treatments for spinal metastasis
ConclusionMost of the guidelines do not provide clear criteria for surgical application and provide more of a basic framework. The level of evidence for these surgical recommendations ranges from LOE B to D, and almost all guidelines recommend vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty, but for palliative and more aggressive surgery, which recommended to personalize specific surgical strategies with multidisciplinary collaboration. Preserving privacy in big data research: the role of federated learning in spine surgery
ConclusionsFederated learning shows great promise in revolutionizing predictive modeling in spine surgery by addressing the challenges of data privacy, accessibility, and sharing. The applications of FL in telesurgery, AI-based predictive models, and medical image segmentation have demonstrated their potential to enhance patient outcomes and value-based care. Unilateral biportal endoscopic discectomy versus microdiscectomy for lumbar disc herniation: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionThe evidence revealed no significant differences in efficacy between UBED and MD for LDH treatment. However, UBED may offer potential benefits such as shorter hospital stays, lower estimated blood loss, and comparable complication rates. (Source: European Spine Journal)

The association between lumbar lordosis preoperatively and changes in PROMs for lumbar spinal stenosis patients 2  years after spinal surgery: radiological and clinical results from the NORDSTEN-spinal stenosis trial
ConclusionLL before surgery was not associated with changes in PROMs 2 years after surgery. Lumbar lordosis should not be a factor when considering decompressive surgery for LSS. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Reconsidering high intensity zones: its role in intervertebral disk degeneration and low back pain
ConclusionsHIZ was prevalent in 41.9% of participants that were recruited in this study. Nucleus degeneration, disk bulge/protrusion and increased IVD angle were found to be independently associated with HIZ and since there is an increased likelihood of LBP, we posit that HIZ is likely a symptomatic and clinically meaningful diagnostic tool in the assessment of LBP. A decade of experience in over 300 surgically treated spine patients with long-term oral anticoagulation: a propensity score  matched cohort study
ConclusionAlthough OAC patients have a higher risk for complications after spine surgery, the risk for major events is low and patients benefit similarly from surgery. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Costs of revision operations for distal junctional kyphosis following thoracic posterior spinal fusion for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis
ConclusionsIn this single-center experience, risk factors for development of DJK were greater BMI, lower post-operative thoracic kyphosis, and LIV cranial to SSV. As revision operations for DJK were significantly more costly than index operations, all efforts should be aimed at strategies to prevent DJK in the AIS population. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Postural control and trunk stability on sway parameters in adults with and without chronic low back pain
ConclusionThe LBP group demonstrated decreased ML sway velocities to enhance trunk stability in the initial two trials. The COG results emphasized the potential use of trunk strategies in augmenting postural stability and optimizing neuromuscular control during unilateral standing. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Lateral fenestration of lumbar intervertebral discs in rabbits: development and characterisation of an in vivo preclinical model with multi-modal endpoint analysis
ConclusionsFenestration, akin to microdiscectomy, demonstrated significant biological, and biomechanical effects in this in vivo rabbit model and warrants consideration by veterinary and human spine surgeons. This described model may be suitable for preclinical in vivo evaluation of therapeutic strategies for IVDD in veterinary and human patients. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Incidence and risk factors of distal adjacent disc degeneration in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients undergoing fusion surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsThis meta-analysis demonstrated that the incidence of intervertebral disc degeneration significantly increased with long-term follow-up using fusion techniques, reaching up to 32% when patients were 28  years of age. Incomplete correction of deformity and fusion of levels below L3, were identified as negative prognostic factors. Furthermore, patients with disc degeneration showed worse functional outcomes. Text neck is not associated with neck and upper limb disability in young adults who use smartphones
ConclusionThere was no association between neck flexion with the DASH and NDI or the grip and lateral pinch strength after the correlation and binary logistic regression analyses. The results show that the scores of DASH, NDI, hand grip and lateral pinch strength, have no association with the maximum neck flexion. (Source: European Spine Journal)
