Long-term outcome of redo discectomy for recurrent lumbar disc herniations
ConclusionThe risk of needing a third surgery seems to stabilize after five years. Patients with an early recurrence after the first discectomy seem to have a higher risk of a new recurrence, so an arthrodesis might be worth considering. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Georg Schmorl prize of the German spine society (DWG) 2022: current treatment for inpatients with osteoporotic thoracolumbar fractures —results of the EOFTT study
ConclusionFracture severity according to the OF classification is significantly correlated with higher surgery rates and higher invasiveness of surgery. The most commonly used surgical strategy was minimally invasive short-segmental hybrid stabilization followed by kyphoplasty/vertebroplasty. Despite the worse clinical conditions of the surgically treated patients both conservative and surgical treatment led to an improved pain situation and mobility during the inpatient stay to nearly the same level for both treatments. Anterior occipital condyle screw placement through the endonasal corridor: proof of concept study with cadaveric analysis
ConclusionEndonasal placement of AOC screws is feasible using a 0 ° driver. Our measurements provide useful parameters to guide optimal placement. Given proximity of hypoglossal canal and jugular bulb, neuronavigation is recommended. Biomechanical studies will ultimately be necessary to evaluate the strength of AOC screws with plate-screw constructs utilizing end onasal C1 lateral mass or C1-2 trans-articular screws as inferior fixation points. Gross total resection of spinal chondrosarcoma is associated with improved locoregional relapse-free survival and overall survival
ConclusionAlthough in our study en bloc and GTR were associated with improved survival, heterogenous and complex spinal presentations may limit total resection. Therefore, the surgical management should be tailored individually to ensure the best local control and maximum preservation of function. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Does the use of postoperative brace help preventing mechanical complications following adult deformity surgery?
ConclusionAfter controlling for potential confounders, our study could not identify the protective effect of postoperative braces preventing mechanical complications and reinterventions in the first two postoperative years. (Source: European Spine Journal)

OLIF versus ALIF: Which is the better surgical approach for degenerative lumbar disease? A systematic review
ConclusionsOLIF leads to a higher complication rate, with the most notable complication being cage subsidence. Both OLIF and ALIF are effective treatments for degenerative lumbar diseases and have similar therapeutic effects. ALIF was expected to be more expensive for patients because of the necessity of involving vascular surgeons. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Are respiratory disorders risk factors for troublesome neck/shoulder pain? A study of a general population cohort in Sweden
ConclusionOur findings indicate that those with no or occasional neck/shoulder pain and reporting to suffer from asthma or COPD increase the risk for troublesome neck/shoulder pain over time. This highlights the importance of taking a multi-morbidity perspective into consideration in health care. Future longitudinal studies are needed to confirm our findings. How effective are physiotherapy interventions in treating people with sciatica? A systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionBased on currently available, mostly high risk of bias and highly heterogeneous data, there is inadequate evidence to make clinical recommendations on the effectiveness of physiotherapy interventions for people with clinically diagnosed sciatica. Future studies should aim to reduce clinical heterogeneity and to use contemporary physiotherapy interventions. (Source: European Spine Journal)
