Greater pelvic obliquity in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis combined with hip dysplasia
ConclusionsThe incidence of hip dysplasia is higher in the AIS population. In adolescents with combined AIS and hip dysplasia, pelvic obliquity is greater, potentially contributing to the increased prevalence of low back pain. (Source: European Spine Journal)

The impact of novel inflammation-preserving treatment towards lumbar disc herniation resorption in symptomatic patients: a prospective, multi-imaging and clinical outcomes study
ConclusionThis is the first study to note inflammation-preserving treatment, without conventional anti-inflammatory and steroid medications, as safe and effective for patients with an acute LDH. Rate of disc resorption (100%) was higher than comparative recent meta-analysis findings (66.7%) and no patient underwent surgery. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Genetic analysis of the causal relationship between gut microbiota and intervertebral disc degeneration: a two-sample Mendelian randomized study
ConclusionThis Mendelian Randomization study found a causal effect between 10 gut microbiota and intervertebral disc degeneration, and we summarize the possible mechanisms of action in the context of existing studies. However, additional research is essential to fully understand the contribution of genetic factors to the dynamics of gut microbiota and its impact on disc degeneration. Radiographic predictors of reaching minimal clinically important difference following lumbar fusion surgery in patients with degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis
ConclusionDLS patients who reached MCID following LFS demonstrated improved post-op spinopelvic alignment. Higher ∆SLL, higher ∆SS, and higher post-op SS were the critical parameters associated with MCID achievement in patients with DLS. (Source: European Spine Journal)

The incidence of reoperation for pseudarthrosis after cervical spine surgery
ConclusionResults from a large multi-center national database revealed that surgery to treat cervical pseudarthrosis has increased from 2012 to 2019. Most pseudarthrosis was treated with a posterior approach. Reoperation to treat cervical pseudarthrosis carried risk, with 5% having complications and 32% having an extended LOS. These results lay the groundwork for a future prospective study to discern the true incidence of cervical pseudarthrosis and how to best avoid its occurrence. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Short-segment spinal fusion for chronic low back pain with bone marrow edema adjacent to the vertebral endplate in adult spinal deformity
ConclusionsShort-segment spinal fusion is effective for treating LBP and spinal deformity with BME adjacent to the vertebral endplate without spinal correction. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Long-term comparison of anterior (ALIF) versus transforaminal (TLIF) lumbar interbody fusion: a propensity score-matched register-based study
ConclusionsThis propensity score-matched national spine register study of patients treated with ALIF versus TLIF of the lumbosacral junction found no differences in proportions of successfully treated patients at long-term follow-up.Level of Evidence IDiagnostic: individual cross-sectional studies with the consistently applied reference standard and blinding. Spinal extradural arachnoid cysts: a rare entity and review of the literature
ConclusionsThe extradural arachnoid cyst is an uncommon entity. Preoperative imaging is one of the determining elements in orienting the therapeutic management of the SEDCs. The choice of the surgical technique must be the least invasive in order to avoid postoperative complications. Subtotal or complete excision of the cyst, followed by obliteration of the communication stalk and repair of the dural defect is the gold standard treatment. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Kyphoplasty is associated with reduced mortality risk for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsBased on a comprehensive analysis of large samples, vertebral augmentation has been shown to significantly reduce the mortality risk associated with OVCFs, particularly in the early stages following fractures. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that KP is more reliable and effective than VP in terms of mitigating mortality risk. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Deep learning prediction of curve severity from rasterstereographic back images in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis
ConclusionDespite some improvement over previous approaches that relied on spine shape reconstruction, the performance of the present fully automatic application is below that of radiographic evaluation performed by human operators. The study confirms that rasterstereography cannot be considered a valid non-invasive alternative to radiographic examination for clinical purposes. (Source: European Spine Journal)
