Development and testing of methods to record and follow up spells in patients with alternating hemiplegia of childhood
CONCLUSIONS: Video-library training improved spell identification. Calendar with weekly reviews resulted in a sustained and consistent record keeping. Caregivers' e-Diary feedback was encouraging with long-term usage in many. These approaches could be helpful for AHC and, potentially, in similar disorders.PMID:37562161 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejpn.2023.07.005 (Source: European Journal of Paediatric Neurology)

A novel approach to seizures in neonates
Eur J Paediatr Neurol. 2023 Jul 27;46:89-97. doi: 10.1016/j.ejpn.2023.07.006. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTHE CHALLENGE OF SEIZURE RECOGNITION: Recognition of seizures in neonates remains the foremost challenge to overcome. All neonates at risk for seizures, especially the critically ill, should undergo video-EEG monitoring. The initial step toward an accurate diagnosis is the accurate description and interpretation of the electro-clinical phenotype. THE IMPORTANCE OF SEIZURE SEMIOLOGY AND ASSOCIATION WITH ETIOLOGY: The early distinction between acute provoked seizures and neonatal-onset epilepsies serves as the primary ...

Altered white matter organization and its correlations with executive functioning among adolescents with epilepsy
Eur J Paediatr Neurol. 2023 Jul 23;46:82-88. doi: 10.1016/j.ejpn.2023.07.004. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDeficits in executive functions (EF) are a common comorbidity among adolescents with epilepsy. EF deficits were previously correlated with altered connectivity of the fronto-parietal and cingulo-opercular neural networks. The current study investigated white matter integrity in adolescents with epilepsy (n = 29) relative to healthy controls (n = 19). Participants completed questionnaires, neuropsychological testing, and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that included diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) sequences. On ...

Validation of the Observer-Reported Communication Ability (ORCA) measure for individuals with Rett syndrome
CONCLUSIONS: This study provided initial support that the modified ORCA measure is an acceptable caregiver-reported measure of communication ability for females with RTT. Future work should include evaluation of longitudinal validity of the measure and its associations with clinician- and performance-based measures in diverse samples.PMID:37536121 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejpn.2023.07.007 (Source: European Journal of Paediatric Neurology)
