Incidence, and factors associated with moderate/severe pediatric traumatic brain injury in children aged 5-15  years in western, Mexico
CONCLUSION: The incidence of moderate/severe p-TBI in children aged 5-15 years in western Mexico in this study was higher than that in other studies. One of the biggest factors associated with moderate/severe p-TBI was male sex, specifically those with lower education levels and those who were prone to falls.PMID:38278011 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejpn.2024.01.001 (Source: European Journal of Paediatric Neurology)

Clinical outcomes and Anti-MOG antibodies in pediatric optic neuritis: A prospective observational study
CONCLUSIONS: Most children with first demyelinating event as ON have a monophasic illness. Despite severe acute-phase visual loss, most eyes with ON will recover good visual functions. The risk of AQP-4 disease and multiple sclerosis is low in this group.PMID:38271780 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejpn.2024.01.003 (Source: European Journal of Paediatric Neurology)

EPITRANS. Quality assessment of the epilepsy transition process
CONCLUSIONS: Significant differences were seen in epilepsy care during transition from pediatric to adult management, and this had an impact on the degree of satisfaction reported by patients and caregivers. Our results provide evidence of the potential value of development and early implementation of a protocolled transition program.PMID:38241904 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejpn.2024.01.004 (Source: European Journal of Paediatric Neurology)

Visual outcome measures in pediatric myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD)
CONCLUSION: Most pediatric MOGAD-ON patients in our cohort presented with acute vison loss and optic disc edema. All patients achieved complete visual recovery, independent of number of relapses or initial visual loss. The pRNFL thickness decreased for several months and stabilized at reduced levels after 12 months in the absence of further relapses. MOGAD may not have subclinical/'silent' effects on the visual system, as visual acuity and pRNFL were not affected in patients without ON.PMID:38217965 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejpn.2023.12.006 (Source: European Journal of Paediatric Neurology)

Electrophysiological variability as marker of dystonia worsening under deep brain stimulation successive withdrawal and renewal effects
CONCLUSION: Our results demonstrate that the neuroplasticity makeup affects the variability of the oscillatory synchrony. This i) informs the shaping of the electrophysiological makeup and ii) might serve as a marker for clinical behavior.PMID:38199204 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejpn.2023.05.012 (Source: European Journal of Paediatric Neurology)

Characteristics of non-sleep related apneas in children with alternating hemiplegia of childhood
CONCLUSIONS: AHC patients experience NSAs that are often severe. These events are usually triggered by seizures or other stressful events and can be successfully managed with interventions tailored to the severity of the NSA.PMID:38096596 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejpn.2023.12.002 (Source: European Journal of Paediatric Neurology)

Fat embolism syndrome in Duchenne muscular dystrophy: Report on a novel case and systematic literature review
We report a non-ambulatory 13-year-old boy with Duchenne muscular dystrophy who experienced severe acute respiratory distress syndrome and cerebral fat embolism following elective soft tissue surgery. Post-surgery radiological examination revealed bilateral femoral fractures and marked osteopenia that were believed to have caused disseminated pulmonary and cerebral fat embolism. The patient had never been on glucocorticoid treatment. Five months post-surgery, he remained in a state of minimal consciousness. A literature review was performed and eleven publications included, providing case reports of a total number of 23 pa...
