Dual effect of polyaromatic hydrocarbons on sarco(endo)plasmic reticulum calcium ATPase (SERCA) activity of a teleost fish (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
Comp Biochem Physiol C Toxicol Pharmacol. 2023 Nov 17;276:109785. doi: 10.1016/j.cbpc.2023.109785. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are embryo- and cardiotoxic to fish that might be associated with improper intracellular Ca2+ management. Since sarco(endo)plasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA) is a major regulator of intracellular Ca2+, the SERCA activity and the contractile properties of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) ventricle were measured in the presence of 3- and 4-cyclic PAHs. In unfractionated ventricular homogenates, acute exposure of SERCA to 0.1-1.0 μM phenanthrene (Phe), ...

Metabolomic response of striped marsh frog (Limnodynastes peronii) tadpoles exposed to the fire retardant Phos-Chek LC95W
Comp Biochem Physiol C Toxicol Pharmacol. 2023 Nov 15:109786. doi: 10.1016/j.cbpc.2023.109786. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTClimate change and other factors have contributed to an increased frequency and intensity of global wildfires in recent years. Ammonium-based fire retardants are widely used to suppress or delay the spread of fire and have generally been regarded as presenting a low risk of acute toxicity to fauna. However, studies have raised concerns about their potential to cause indirect or sub-lethal effects, and toxicity information regarding the potential for such impacts in aquatic species is limited. To addr...

Assessment of oxidative stress biomarkers in the threatened annual killifish Austrolebias charrua exposed to roundup
This study aimed to analyze the toxic effects of Roundup Transorb® on the endangered Neotropical annual killifish Austrolebias charrua through the assessment of molecular and biochemical biomarkers. The fish was collected in temporary ponds and exposed to environmentally realistic concentrations of the herbicide (5 mg. L-1 for 96 h). The production of ROS, lipid peroxidation, DNA damage, and membrane fluidity were evaluated in the blood cells by flow cytometry. The mRNA expression of the antioxidant-related genes sod2, cat, gstα, atp1a1, gclc, and ucp1 across the brain, liver, and gills was quantified. The acute exposure...

Protective effects of melanoidins from black garlic on zearalenone-induced toxicity in zebrafish embryonic developmental model
In this study, the alleviative effects of black garlic MLDs on ZEN-induced toxicity and the potential mechanisms were studied using zebrafish embryonic developmental model. The results showed that MLDs restored the ZEN-induced adverse influences on zebrafish embryonic development, including delay in hatching time, morphological abnormality and the impairment of nervous development. Further studies showed that MLDs significantly inhibited the ZEN-induced production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and enhanced the intrinsic antioxidant ability by increasing the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidas...

Oxidative stress responses in two marine diatoms during sulfamethoxazole exposure and the toxicological evaluation using the IBR < sub > v2 < /sub > index
This study aimed to investigate the toxic effects of SMX on the growth, photosynthetic pigment content, and oxidative stress of two marine microalgae species: Skeletonema costatum and Phaeodactylum tricornutum. SMX demonstrated a significant inhibitory effect on microalgae proliferation, with 96-h median effective concentration (EC50) values of 0.93 mg/L and 4.65 mg/L for S. costatum and P. tricornutum, respectively. At low concentrations, SMX significantly increased the production of Chl a in both microalgae species. However, in the higher concentration SMX treatment group, Chl a content in P. tricornutum experienced a si...
