Zinc attenuates arsenic overdose-induced brain damage via PERK/ATF6 and TLR/MyD88/NF- κB pathways
Comp Biochem Physiol C Toxicol Pharmacol. 2023 Nov 30:109806. doi: 10.1016/j.cbpc.2023.109806. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTExposure to arsenic (As), a widespread non-metallic toxicant in nature, often results in neurotoxicity, although the exact mechanism is unknown. Zinc (Zn) is a powerful nutrient often thought to be beneficial for growth, development and immunity. Whether Zn can rescue brain damage caused by As contamination remains to be demonstrated. Therefore, in this study, a 30-day model of As poisoning (2.83 mg/L) in carp was established and treated with Zn (1 mg/L) to investigate the detoxification mechanism in...

Investigation of ammonia-induced lethal toxicity toward ion regulation in zebrafish embryos
In conclusion, ammonia exposure was shown to induce oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction in ionocytes and apoptosis in keratinocytes, thereby impairing ion regulation and ultimately leading to the death of zebrafish embryos.PMID:38013044 | DOI:10.1016/j.cbpc.2023.109807 (Source: Comparative biochemistry and physiology. Phenethyl isothiocyanate induces cytotoxicity and apoptosis of porcine kidney cells through Mitochondrial ROS-associated ERS pathway
In this study, we investigated the inhibitory effect of PEITC on a porcine kidney (PK-15) cell line and explored the mechanism of PEITC-induced apoptosis. We found that PEITC could affect cell viability and induce cell apoptosis after incubating cells for 24 h. High concentrations of PEITC can induce intracellular ROS accumulation, resulting in impaired mitochondrial function (decreased MMP, decreased ATP) and DNA damage (increased 8-OHdG), cytochrome c in mitochondria is released into the cytoplasm and activates mitochondrial pathway apoptosis-related proteins (Bcl-2 family and caspase-9, -3). Meanwhile, PEITC could induc...

Snails go on a fast when acetylsalicylic acid comes along with heat stress: A possible effect of HSPs and serotonergic system on the feeding response
Comp Biochem Physiol C Toxicol Pharmacol. 2023 Nov 25;276:109805. doi: 10.1016/j.cbpc.2023.109805. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA novel food followed by sickness, causes a taste-specific conditioned aversion, known as the 'Garcia effect'. We recently found that both a heat shock stressor (30 °C for 1 h - HS) and the bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) can be used as 'sickness-inducing' stimuli to induce a Garcia effect in the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis. Additionally, if snails are exposed to acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) present in aspirin tablets before the LPS injection, the formation of the Garcia effect is prevented. H...
