Intersectional Effect of Gender, Race, and Socioeconomic Status in Mental Health Service Utilization: Evidence from the Canadian Community Health Survey 2015-2016
This study examined the intersectional effects of gender, race, and socioeconomic status (SES) on mental health service utilization (MHSU) employing the intersectionality framework. Data was extracted from Canadian Community Health Survey 2015-2016 with a total of 85,619 sample. Covariate adjusted prevalence ratio (aPR) and the predicted probability of MHSU from intersectional analyses were estimated using Poisson regression with robust variance. The prevalence of MHSU was 15.04% overall, 19.61% among women, 10.27% among men, 21.56% among white women and 11.12% among white men. The study observed overall significant inters...

The Economic Effect of Peer Recovery Support Services: A Review of the Literature
Community Ment Health J. 2023 Nov 29. doi: 10.1007/s10597-023-01212-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPeer Recovery Support Services (PRSS) have the potential to be an economically valuable intervention. To investigate this potential, we conducted a scoping review to summarize existing research on the economic impact of PRSS. We searched relevant electronic databases for peer-reviewed articles and grey literature between January 2000 and February 2023 that examined an economic outcome related to PRSS. Following a comprehensive search, screening, and full-text evaluation, eight articles were selected for review. The majority...

Implementing a National Navigation Service for Perinatal and Infant Mental Health: Early Learnings from the ForWhen Model
Community Ment Health J. 2023 Nov 22. doi: 10.1007/s10597-023-01211-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTForWhen is an Australia-based national navigation service aimed at helping parents and carers navigate the perinatal mental health service landscape and connect them with appropriate support and clinical services. The current study forms part of a mixed-methods evaluation of the ForWhen program. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ForWhen navigators during the early design and implementation phases of the service. Results were used to characterise the ForWhen navigator activities and responsibilities, identify na...

Mobile Crisis Services: A Clinician Survey of Current Suicide Prevention Practices and Barriers to Care Delivery
Community Ment Health J. 2023 Nov 20. doi: 10.1007/s10597-023-01208-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMobile crisis teams (MCTs) deploy clinicians to assist individuals in acute crisis in the community. Little is known about the extent to which these teams provide evidence-based practices (EBPs) for suicide prevention nor the barriers they face. We surveyed 120 MCT clinicians across the United States about their: (1) use of suicide risk screening and assessment tools; (2) strategies used to address suicide risk (both EBPs and non-EBPs); and (3) perceived barriers to high-quality MCT services. Nearly all clinicians reported ...

Factors to Improve Reverse Integration: A Mixed Method Embedded Design Study
Community Ment Health J. 2023 Nov 20. doi: 10.1007/s10597-023-01203-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIndividuals with serious mental illness face inequity in receiving primary care services. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) granted funds to Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHC) to integrate primary care and behavioral health specialties to increase access to care. This mixed method study aimed to measure the SAMHSA-defined levels of reverse integration at a CCBHC at one point in time. Providers and patients provided feedback through semi-structured interviews. Qualitati...
