Unlocking Lewis acidity < em > via < /em > the redox non-innocence of a phenothiazine-substituted borane
We describe a new approach to enhancing Lewis acidity, through the single electron oxidation of a borane with a pendant phenothiazine. This results in the formation of a persistent radical cation with increased electrophilicity. Computational and experimental studies indicate this radical cation significantly enhances the Lewis acidity and catalytic activity compared to its neutral analog. These results illustrate the viability of this approach in turning on the Lewis acidity of relatively inert boranes.PMID:38586997 | DOI:10.1039/d4cc01059k (Source: Chemical Communications)

Iodine-mediated oxidative triple functionalization of indolines with azoles and diazonium salts
We report an innovative synthetic strategy for the generation of polysubstituted indoles from indolines, aryldiazonium salts, and azoles. The methodology encompasses an electrophilic substitution reaction affording C5-indoline intermediates which undergo an iodine-mediated oxidative transformation coupled with C-H functionalization to yield the indole derivatives.PMID:38587256 | DOI:10.1039/d4cc00856a (Source: Chemical Communications)

Photoredox-catalyzed carbonylative acylation of styrenes with Hantzsch esters
Chem Commun (Camb). 2024 Apr 8. doi: 10.1039/d4cc01293c. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTKetones exist widely in naturally occurring products and are indispensable building blocks in organic synthesis. Carbonylation represents one of the most straightforward methods for ketone preparation and has become an attractive field in modern organic chemistry as well. Among the strategies, photocatalytic carbonylation is also worthy of further exploration. Herein, we developed a three-component carbonylation that provides a new method for the synthesis of ketones from Hantzsch esters, CO and styrenes. The reaction was performed under...

Halide-free CO < sub > 2 < /sub > cycloaddition onto styrene oxide catalysed by first row transition-metal derivatives of polyoxotungstates
Chem Commun (Camb). 2024 Apr 5. doi: 10.1039/d4cc00522h. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTQuaternary ammonium salts of metal derivatives of polyoxometalates [XW11O39M(H2O)]n- (X = P, Si; M = Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Zn) were successfully tested instead of quaternary ammonium halides as catalysts in the cycloaddition of CO2 to styrene oxide. Remarkably, they gave very satisfactory yields of styrene carbonate at moderate temperature (80 °C).PMID:38577743 | DOI:10.1039/d4cc00522h (Source: Chemical Communications)

Chem Commun (Camb). 2024 Apr 5. doi: 10.1039/d4cc00465e. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHerein, we report a copper(I)-free method for labeling the trifluoroacetyl group with positron-emitting carbon-11 (t1/2 = 20.4 min) or fluorine-18 (t1/2 = 109.8 min) as part of our exploration of radiolabeled fluoroforms to access new radiolabeled chemotypes of interest for tracer development. Treatment of alkyl esters and aryl esters, containing electron-donating or electron-withdrawing groups, with [11C/18F]fluoroform in the presence of strong base, gave [11C/18F]trifluoromethyl ketones as novel radiolabeling synthons in moderate to hi...
