Acceleration of Enamel Subsurface Lesion Remineralisation by Intralesion pH Modulation
Remineralisation of demineralised enamel subsurface lesions can be enhanced by pretreatment of the lesions with base (NaOH). The aim of this study was to test the effect of intralesion pH modulation on remineralisation of demineralised enamel subsurface lesions by casein phosphopeptide-stabilised amorphous calcium fluoride phosphate (CPP-ACFP) in vitro. Two remineralisation models were utilised, the first involving 60-min cyclic pH modulation for 105 h and the second involved short-term cyclic pH modulation (12-min cycle, 240 min total duration) compared with the equivalent time of continuous treatment (200 min total durat...

Does the Trimester of Smoking Matter in the Association between Prenatal Smoking and the Risk of Early Childhood Caries?
Conclusions: Within the limitations of covariates adjusted for, with the caveat that residual confounding and bias from unmeasured covariates are likely present, our findings suggest that smoking during pregnancy may be harmful to the oral health of the offspring irrespective of the trimester during which the smoking occurred. Nevertheless, these results should be interpreted cautiously because the findings might not generalize broadly.Caries Res (Source: Caries Research)

Protective Effect of Solutions Containing Polymers Associated with Fluoride and Stannous Chloride on Hydroxyapatite Dissolution
This study investigated the protective effect of experimental solutions containing 4 polymers (polyoxirane, hydroxypropylmethylcellulose [HPMC], pectin, and an amino methacrylate copolymer [AMC]) in 2 concentrations (low and high) associated or not with sodium fluoride (F; 225 ppm F–) or sodium fluoride plus stannous chloride (FS; 800 ppm Sn2+) on the dissolution of hydroxyapatite crystals (HA). Deionized water was the control. The pretreated HA was added to a 0.3% citric acid solution (pH 3.8). An automatic titrant machine added aliquots of 0.1 N HCl at a rate of 28 μL/min, in a total reaction time of 5 min. Groups wer...

Epidemiology of Erosive Tooth Wear, Dental Fluorosis and Molar Incisor Hypomineralization in the American Continent
Non-carious dental lesions such as developmental defects of enamel (DDE) and erosive tooth wear (ETW) are the subject of intensive research. This paper aims to give perspectives on both DDE, including dental fluorosis and molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH), and ETW, presenting epidemiological data from the Americas and associated diagnostic aspects. Besides, it is important to present evidence to guide the clinical assessment process, supporting the clinicians ’ management decisions towards better oral health of their patients. The overall increase in the worldwide prevalence of non-carious lesions discussed in this ...

Experiencing Financial Strain and Clinically Assessed Caries Experience in Dentate Adults Aged 25 –44 Years: An Exploration of Potential Pathways
Large socioeconomic inequalities still exist in oral health. It is already known that oral health-related behaviour may contribute to these inequalities, but why people with a lower socioeconomic position behave less healthily is not easily understood. A possible explanation that integrates insights on health behaviour, stress, and financial resources is the pathway of behavioural responses to financial strain. The aim of this study was to assess to what extent financial strain is associated with clinically assessed caries experience in a population-based study of dentate adults, independently of other socioeconomic indica...

The Top 100 Most-Cited Papers in Cariology: A Bibliometric Analysis
This study aimed to quali-quantitatively analyze the 100 most-cited papers in Cariology. A search strategy was first determined using specific keywords related to the field. A comprehensive search was then conducted in the Thompson Reuters Web of Science citation indexing database up to April 2019. Papers focused on any aspect of Cariology were included. A panel of 4 researchers conducted the selection of papers and extracted data on the number of citations, title, authors, country, year, journals, study design, and topic of interest. Scopus and Google Scholar were also searched to compare the number of citations. The VOSv...

Pulp Vitality and Longevity of Adhesive Restorations Are Not Affected by Selective Carious Removal: A Multicenter Clinical Trial
The aim of this multicenter randomized clinical trial was to evaluate the pulp vitality and survival rate of adhesive restorations performed on posterior deciduous teeth after non-selective (NSCR) or selective (SCR) carious tissue removal over 33 months. One hundred and seven children (average age 4 –8 years, SD 1.4) with at least two active moderate cavitated lesions in dentin were included. Teeth were randomized and submitted to NSCR or SCR before composite resin restoration. Restorations were clinically and radiographically assessed at baseline, 6, 12, 18, 24, and 33 months by a blinded, t rained, and calibrated opera...
