< b > < i > Streptococcus mutans < /i > < /b > Gene Expression and Functional Profile in Root Caries: An RNA-Seq Study
This study aimed to investigate theS. mutans gene expression and functional profile within the metatranscriptome of biofilms from SRS and from RC in an attempt to identify enriched functional signatures potentially associated with the healthy-to-disease transitioning process. Total RNA was extracted, and prepared libraries (SRS = 10 and RC = 9) were paired-end sequenced using the Illumina HiSeq2500. A read count assigned to each gene of theS. mutans UA159 strain was obtained. Differentially expressed genes (DEG) between SRS and RC were identified using the DESeq2 R package, and weighted gene co-expression network analysis ...

Teaching Cariology in Asia and Arabia
In conclusion, many Arabian and Asian countries have implemented modern, evidence-based curricula in their universities, but an obligatory national curriculum in cariology would be advisable to standardize the quality in teaching. (Source: Caries Research)

In vitro effect of occlusal loading on cervical wall lesion development in a Class II composite restoration.
Aim: determine the effect of simulated occlusal loading on wall lesion development in cervical gaps of Class-II composite restorations in vitro. 64 extracted human molars received standardized (4.0x4.2x3.0 mm) box preparations. The teeth were randomly assigned to one of two restoration groups: restoration with a normal or a low E-modulus composite material (Clearfil AP-X: E-modulus 16.8 GPa; or Clearfil Majesty ES Flow: E-modulus 6.6 GPa). A metal matrix was placed at the bottom of the box for each restoration, creating a cervical gap of about 100 µm wide. Samples were exposed to simulated caries lesion development in a l...

Acquired pellicle engineering using a combination of organic (sugarcane cystatin) and inorganic (sodium fluoride) components against dental erosion
This study evaluated the combination of a sugarcane cystatin (CaneCPI-5) and sodium fluoride (NaF) in acquired pellicle engineering for the prevention of dental erosion in vitro. 75 human enamel specimens were prepared and divided into 5 treatment groups (n = 15/group): Deionized water (Control); Elmex ™ (SnCl2/NaF/AmF); 0.1 mg/ml CaneCPI-5; 500 ppm NaF; and CaneCPI-5+NaF (Combination). The specimens were individually treated (200 μl; 2 min; 37 °C), then incubated in human saliva (200 μl; 1 h, at 37 °C) for acquired pellicle formation. Afterwards, the specimens were submitted to an erosive c hallenge (1% citric acid,...

Prevalence of Dental Caries in Past European Populations: A Systematic Review
Conclusion: Despite the well-established collective belief that caries rates fluctuate between different locations and time and the general view that caries rates have increased from prehistoric times and onwards, this is to our knowledge the first time this relationship has been proven based on published data. The Top 100 Most-Cited Papers in Erosive Tooth Wear: A Bibliometric Analysis
Citation rates can be used as an indicator of the influence and relevance of scientific papers. The present study analyzed the 100 most-cited articles related to erosive tooth wear (ETW). The top 100 most-cited papers focusing on ETW topics were collected from the Web of Science database on November 11th, 2020. The following bibliometric data were extracted from papers: title, authorship, institutions, countries, number of citations, year of publication, journal title, study design, topic, and keywords. Scopus and Google Scholar were searched to compare the number of citations. The VOSviewer software was used to generate c...

The effect of various fluoride products on dentine lesions during pH-cycling
In conclusion, all topical fluoride products protected the dentine lesions against lesion progression, but at dif ferent degrees. SDF showed a superior effect in protection against further demineralization and enhancement of remineralization. This was probably attributed to its fluoride concentration that was the highest among the fluoride products. (Source: Caries Research)

Dental caries in children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a meta-analysis
Conclusion: The main shortcoming of the included studies is the high risk of bias regarding the strategies to deal with confounding factors. Within its limitations, this systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrate d that children with ADHD were more likely to develop dental caries than their healthy counterparts. Fluoride formed on enamel by fluoride varnish or gel application: A randomized controlled clinical trial
In conclusion, fluoride varnish needs to remain in contact with the teeth for prolonged times (>4 h) to reach the same reactivity obtained by a 4-min application of APF-gel. (Source: Caries Research)
