Prevalence of elbow dysplasia in 13 dog breeds in France: a retrospective radiographic study (2002-2022)
This study included 17,861 records for 13 dog breeds: American Akita, Alaskan Malamute, Old German Shepherd (Altdeutscher Schäferhund), American Staffordshire Terrier, Australian Shepherd, Belgian Shepherd, White Swiss Shepherd, Bernese Mountain Dog, Cane Corso, Czechoslovakian Wolfdog, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Rottweiler, and Dogue de Bordeaux. The overall prevalence of ED was 11.4%, ranging from 1.1% in the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog to 32.2% in the Dogue de Bordeaux. The Dogue de Bordeaux, Rottweiler, Bernese Mountain Dog, and Cane Corso breeds were most commonly affected by ED. The prevalence of ED was significantly higher i...

Serial injections of 4% polyacrylamide hydrogel have no detrimental effects in equine joints following clinical, histologic, and synovial biomarker evaluation
The objectives of this study were to evaluate the clinical, histologic, and synovial fluid biomarker effects following serial administration of 4% PAHG in normal equine fetlock joints.ANIMALS: 8 healthy horses.METHODS: In a blinded, controlled in vivo study, horses received serial intra-articular injections of 4% PAHG (Noltrex Vet; Nucleus ProVets LLC) and contralateral 0.9% saline control on days 0, 45, 90, and 135. Treatment and control joints were randomly assigned. Synovial fluid was collected before administration of 4% PAHG or 0.9% saline on day 0 and at study completion for cellular and biomarker evaluation. Serial ...

Doppler ultrasound is more accurate than pulse oximeter plethysmography in the measurement of systolic arterial pressure from the median caudal artery in anesthetized dogs
Am J Vet Res. 2024 Mar 23:1-7. doi: 10.2460/ajvr.23.11.0263. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVE: To compare the accuracy of doppler ultrasound (DOP) and pulse oximeter plethysmography (POP) in the measurement of systolic arterial pressure (SAP) to invasive blood pressure (IBP) in anesthetized dogs.ANIMALS: 40 client-owned healthy dogs > 10 kg.METHODS: Dogs were anesthetized for surgical procedures in dorsal recumbency. Invasive blood pressure was measured from a dorsal pedal artery. DOP and POP device probes were placed over the median caudal artery with a flow-occluding cuff for noninvasive blood pressure measurem...

Hemadsorption extracorporeal therapy removes cytokines ex vivo in horses
Am J Vet Res. 2024 Mar 18:1-8. doi: 10.2460/ajvr.24.01.0022. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVE: Plasma cytokine adsorption has shown benefit as an adjunctive therapy in human sepsis but has yet to be investigated in horses. We hypothesized that ex vivo filtration of equine plasma with a novel cytokine adsorption device would significantly reduce concentrations of lipopolysaccharide-stimulated cytokines. We also hypothesized that the device would adsorb medications commonly used to treat sepsis.ANIMALS: 8 horses owned by North Carolina State University.METHODS: Four liters of heparinized whole blood was collected from...
