Ultra-Wide-Field Optical Coherence Tomography and Gaussian Curvature to Assess Macular and Paravascular Retinoschisis in High Myopia
High myopia (HM) is a severe form of nearsightedness characterized by a highly negative refractive error (usually -6 diopters or worse) and eye elongation.1 A meta-analysis conducted in 2010 reported a global prevalence of HM of 2.7% among individuals aged 15 and above.2 However, this prevalence is projected to increase in the coming decades, with an estimated 938 million people affected by HM by 2050, which would be approximately 9.8% of the global population.3 In HM patients, the progressive elongation of the eyeball can lead to various retinal abnormalities, such as myopic macular retinoschisis (MRS), characterized by t...

Comment on Large Language Models in Ophthalmology Scientific Writing: Ethical Considerations, Blurred Lines or Not at All?1
Salimi and Saheb demonstrated the impressive capabilities of ChatGPT 3.5, a Large Language Model (LLM) that “co-authored” the opening 10 paragraphs of their article on the significant impacts and ethical problems with using LLMs in Ophthalmology scientific writing1. Our correspondence explores how the technical processes LLMs use to produce content are incompatible with the scientific method, research , and academic publishing. Anterior chamber cholesterol crystals in stage 5C retinopathy of prematurity
A 1-year-old girl was referred for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) with total retinal detachment and flat anterior chamber in her right eye (Figure A). The lens and preretinal fibrovascular tissue were then removed. Examination showed clear anterior chamber and open-funnel retina with subretinal cholesterol crystals six months after surgery (Figure, B). Five months later, sparkling substance was seen in the eye. Examination revealed anterior chamber sparkling crystals (Figure, C). A procedure of intraocular lavage was performed. (Source: American Journal of Ophthalmology)

Omidenepag Isopropyl Versus Timolol in Patients With Glaucoma or Ocular Hypertension: Two Randomized Phase 3 Trials (SPECTRUM 4 and 3)
Glaucoma refers to a group of optic nerve diseases associated with progressive vision loss and is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide.1 Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is a key contributing factor for the progression of open-angle glaucoma (OAG) and ocular hypertension (OHT).2 IOP reduction remains a key goal for glaucoma therapy2 and reducing elevated IOP with ocular hypotensive medication has been demonstrated to delay disease progression.3-5 (Source: American Journal of Ophthalmology)

Genetics, Clinical Characteristics, and Natural History of PDE6B-Associated Retinal Dystrophy
Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) (OMIM #268000) is the most common hereditary retinal disease. It is characterized by progressive retinal degeneration that causes symptoms of early nyctalopia and peripheral field constriction, eventually affecting the central vision and leading to legal blindness.1 One in 3-4000 in the population has RP, and it can be inherited as autosomal recessive in 50 –60% of cases, 30–40% as autosomal dominant and the remaining ∼5–15% as X-linked inheritance.2, 3 Non-syndromic RP has been associated with more than 80 genes, more than 35 which have been associated with an autosomal recessive mode of ...

Incidence and Outcomes of Eye Trauma Associated with Recreative Use of Non-Powder Toy-Guns: a 12-years retrospective study
A recent study reported that non-powder toy-guns (NPTG) were responsible for 8,630 ocular injuries in patients of 0 to 20 years old in the United States between 2000 and 20191. While this publication provides an interesting overview of the demographics of these injuries, detailed data on the projectile involved and its influence on the ophthalmological outcomes is lacking2. Paintball guns, air guns, BB/airsoft guns, foam bullets and/or foam darts blasters have distinct operating mechanisms, and various projectile designs and do not follow the same regulations and/or age-labelling.
