Empathy and support exchanges in couples coping with early-stage Alzheimer's disease
CONCLUSION: Findings describe support reciprocity in early-stage AD and debunk the myth of people with AD being only recipients of care. We identify risk and resilience in couples per empathy and inform the design of dyadic interventions to promote mutually beneficial relationships in AD.PMID:38468497 | DOI:10.1080/13607863.2024.2326958 (Source: Aging and Mental Health)

Mental pain as a mediator in the association between avoidant attachment and suicidal ideation among older men
CONCLUSIONS: Mental pain should be considered as a complication of an avoidant coping strategy, which increases the risk of suicide among older men, especially those suffering from significant physical illnesses. The theoretical and clinical implications of these findings are discussed.PMID:38456825 | DOI:10.1080/13607863.2024.2323957 (Source: Aging and Mental Health)

The role of implicit theories of intelligence and personality in older adults' resilience: cognitive functioning and social participation as two mediators
CONCLUSION: Older adults' implicit theory of intelligence plays a significant role in fostering resilience in late adulthood, especially through maintaining older adults' cognitive functioning.PMID:38444324 | DOI:10.1080/13607863.2024.2323950 (Source: Aging and Mental Health)

Diversity of purposes of use, time spent online, and depression among older Chinese Internet users
Conclusion: This study calls for a closer examination of online profiles among older Internet users; more attention should be paid to the potential harms of excessive Internet use for social reasons only among older adults. Practitioners should enhance older Internet users' digital literacy to maximize the wide-range benefits of Internet use and reduce potential health inequality.PMID:38436261 | DOI:10.1080/13607863.2024.2323953 (Source: Aging and Mental Health)

Childhood maltreatment and association with trajectories of depressive symptoms among older adults: a longitudinal study in China
CONCLUSION: This study provides empirical evidence that childhood physical abuse increases the likelihood of developing chronic depressive symptoms in later life. To mitigate this risk, it is crucial to institute comprehensive treatment plans that incorporate trauma-informed care principles, employ evidence-based therapies specifically designed to address the long-term effects of abuse, and prioritize regular screening and assessment of mental health among older adults.PMID:38436285 | DOI:10.1080/13607863.2024.2323955 (Source: Aging and Mental Health)

Burden and quality of life of family caregivers of Alzheimer's disease patients: the role of forgiveness as a coping strategy
CONCLUSION: Based on the results, there is a need to intervene in older family caregivers, particularly those who did not choose to become a caregiver, who report greater distress, have worse family relationships, and display less use of forgiveness, in order to decrease their burden and promote QoL.PMID:38425032 | DOI:10.1080/13607863.2024.2320138 (Source: Aging and Mental Health)
