Anti-viral Effects of Pavetta indica Methanolic Extract and Acyclovir on Behavioral and Biochemical Parameters in Streptozotocin-induced Alzheimer's Disease in Rats
CONCLUSION: In a dose-dependent manner, acyclovir and Pavetta indica methanolic extract treatments abrogated the streptozotocin-induced behavioral and neurological abnormalities in rats. The potential therapeutic effects of PIME and acyclovir administration in intracerebroventricular-streptozotocin-treated rats may be attributed to its potential antiviral, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects. The current study suggests that Pavetta indica methanolic extract and acyclovir are promising therapeutic targets against Alzheimer's disease.PMID:38685761 | DOI:10.2174/0118715303273145240110100341 (Source: Herpes)

Associations between organic erectile dysfunction and the risk of herpes zoster and postherpetic neuralgia in men
CONCLUSIONS: Men experiencing OED seem to face elevated risks of HZ and PHN compared to those without OED. ED may serve as a warning sign for individuals at HZ risk.PMID:38685668 | DOI:10.1080/13685538.2024.2346310 (Source: Herpes)

Clinical characteristics and outcomes of acute liver failure in neonates: a retrospective cohort in China
Conclusion: Hypoxic/ischemic injury and infection are the predominant etiologies of NALF in China. The overall prognosis of NALF is poor, but its short-term prognosis is determined by the etiology. What is Known: • Neonatal acute liver failure (NALF) is a rare disorder with limited cohort studies, especially in China. • Gestational alloimmune liver disease, viral infections (especially herpes simplex virus), metabolic diseases and ischemic insults are common etiologies of NALF, which are significantly different from other populations. • There are no reliable biochemical markers to predict the outcome of NALF. What is...

Circadian changes of autonomic function in patients with zoster-associated pain: A heart rate variability analysis
CONCLUSION: The results of this study indicated that ZAP contributes to the decline of autonomic nervous system (ANS) function, especially parasympathetic components. The patients with ZAP lost parasympathetic advantage and had a worse ANS during the night.PMID:38688880 | DOI:10.1002/brb3.3489 (Source: Herpes)

Herpes zoster vaccination and the risk of dementia: A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Herpes zoster vaccination is associated with a reduction of the risk of dementia. More epidemiological studies are needed to confirm the association.PMID:38687552 | PMC:PMC10839537 | DOI:10.1002/brb3.3415 (Source: Herpes)

Performance characteristics of highly automated HSV-1 and HSV-2 IgG testing
This study is the first large-scale comparison of performance metrics for the Bio-Rad and Roche assays in over 10 years. Our study confirms that there remains room for improvement in HSV serological diagnostic testing-especially in regard to low sensitivities for HSV-1 IgG detection-and highlights that some previously less-studied assays may have better performance metrics than previously considered typical of commercially available HSV-2 IgG assays.PMID:38687020 | DOI:10.1128/jcm.00263-24 (Source: Herpes)

Effect analysis of facial nerve decompression surgery in the treatment of Bell's palsy and Hunt syndrome
Conclusion:Patients with Bell's palsy and Hunter syndrome can achieve good results after facial nerve decompression within 3 months of onset, and there is no significant difference in the surgical effect between the two types of patients.PMID:38686475 | DOI:10.13201/j.issn.2096-7993.2024.05.008 (Source: Herpes)

The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Bell's Palsy and Ramsay-Hunt Syndrome: A Multicenter Retrospective Study
CONCLUSION: This study highlights the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the presentation and management of facial palsy, and suggests potential associations with COVID-19. Notably, the observed increase in Bell's palsy cases among elderly individuals with diabetes emphasizes the impact of the pandemic. Identifying the epidemiological changes in facial palsy during the COVID-19 pandemic has important implications for assessing its etiology and pathological mechanisms of facial palsy disease.PMID:38685888 | PMC:PMC11058340 | DOI:10.3346/jkms.2024.39.e140 (Source: Herpes)

Effect of dolutegravir on ferritin, iron, and C-reactive protein among people living with HIV and co-infections
Conclusion: The presence of co-infections in PLWH is associated with higher VL and with chronic inflammation. Ferritin and CRP decreased on dolutegravir-based ART but remained higher in people with co-infections despite similar rates of virologic suppression.
