Gastrointestinal Kaposi: A Rare Case Unveiling the Presentation and Management Challenges of an Uncommon Neoplasm in the Digestive Tract
Cureus. 2024 Mar 25;16(3):e56892. doi: 10.7759/cureus.56892. eCollection 2024 Mar.ABSTRACTGastrointestinal Kaposi's sarcoma (GI-KS), which is frequently observed in individuals with HIV/AIDS, tends to manifest with vague symptoms or may not show any symptoms at all. These symptoms can include abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, and low levels of iron in the blood, and they may worsen as the tumor enlarges, leading to more severe issues such as blockage or perforation of the bowel. Diagnosis usually requires an endoscopy to confirm the presence of GI-SK in individuals showing symptoms. In this case report, we describe a...

Real-world efficacy and safety of tofacitinib treatment in Asian patients with ulcerative colitis
CONCLUSION: TOF was more effective in UC patients with mild activity at baseline and its efficacy was not affected by previous treatment with anti-TNF-α agents. Most relapsed patients responded again after re-increase of TOF and nearly half relapsed after tapering off TOF. Special attention is needed for tapering and HZ.PMID:38659488 | PMC:PMC11036499 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v30.i13.1871 (Source: Herpes)

Seroprevalence of sexually transmitted infections over 44 years - A cross-sectional study in Sweden
CONCLUSIONS: There was a decrease over time in Chlamydia trachomatis seroprevalence, probably due to contact tracing, testing and early treatment; this might also have affected Mycoplasma genitalium seroprevalence. Despite the reduction, seroprevalences are still high, so continued and new efforts to reduce STI incidence are essential.PMID:38659325 | DOI:10.1177/09564624241248874 (Source: Herpes)

Herpes simplex virus-1 susceptibility as a risk factor for sepsis, with cytomegalovirus susceptibility elevating severity: insights from a bidirectional Mendelian randomization study
CONCLUSIONS: Our study identifies HSV-1 susceptibility as a sepsis risk, with CMV susceptibility elevating severity. Varied effects of EBV and CMV antibodies on sepsis severity are noted. Severe sepsis results in a decline in CMV antibody levels. Our results help prognostic and predictive enrichment and offer valuable information for precision sepsis treatment.PMID:38662585 | DOI:10.1097/SHK.0000000000002351 (Source: Herpes)

Differential Utility Losses in Herpes Zoster Cases Between Vaccinated and Unvaccinated Subjects: A Meta-analysis of Three Clinical Trials
CONCLUSIONS: Recombinant zoster vaccine is effective in alleviating disease severity in breakthrough cases of herpes zoster. The results may be useful in distinguishing QALY losses between vaccinated and unvaccinated cohorts in health economics studies, particularly cost-effectiveness analyses.PMID:38662318 | DOI:10.1007/s40261-024-01355-1 (Source: Herpes)

PD-L1 Expression in Nonbacterial Chronic Cystitis and Bladder Cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Expression of PD-L1 was detected in a cohort of NCC patients, although the PD-L1 positivity rate was lower than that in BC. Our results demonstrate that the degree of PD-L1 expression in bladder tissue is associated with the presence of viral infections and with the degree of inflammatory infiltration of the bladder wall in both NCC and BC.PMID:38662109 | DOI:10.1007/s00192-024-05782-8 (Source: Herpes)

Systemic therapy for psoriasis and the risk of cutaneous infections
In conclusion, our study reveals that systemic therapies may increase the risk of cutaneous viral infections. Therefore, dermatologists should exercise caution in this regard.PMID:38660962 | DOI:10.1111/1346-8138.17245 (Source: Herpes)

Case report: Shingles-associated probable Bickerstaff brainstem encephalitis with IgM anti-sulfatide positivity
CONCLUSIONS: We emphasize the importance of a careful medical history and assessment of clinical symptoms, performing MRI, testing autoimmune antibodies for rapid diagnosis, and ruling out differential diagnoses. Further studies involving more patients with BBE with IgM anti-sulfatide autoantibodies will increase the understanding of the clinical characteristics and advance the diagnosis and treatment of this syndrome. Meanwhile, it is crucial for dermatologists to know about this severe neurological complication following shingles.PMID:38660303 | PMC:PMC11041370 | DOI:10.3389/fimmu.2024.1358886 (Source: Herpes)
