The Blatant, Accepted Fraud of the " Anti-Aging " Marketplace Will Eventually Evaporate
The existence of actual, working rejuvenation therapies will eventually chase out the fraud and lies from the "anti-aging" marketplace, and what will be left is just plain old medicine - but much better, more advanced medicine than we have today. This will take years, however, and the established hucksters will continue to have a fine old time on their way out. They will continue to cherry-pick studies, cloak the junk that doesn't work in a thin veneer of science, mimicking the voices and marketing of legitimate ventures. The basic lie that is loudly propagated by the "anti-aging" business, that their products can make a d...

Kratom: harmless herbal supplement or dangerous drug?
What is it? Kratom is a powdered herbal supplement derived from the leaves of a tropical evergreen tree that is native to Southeast Asia and is usually taken orally but can also be brewed into teas. It is commonly used by consumers as an alternative medicine to self-treat opioid addiction and chronic pain.  The leaves contain two compounds, mitragynine and 7-a-hydroxymitragyine, which interact with various receptors in the brain. At low doses the drug acts similar to a stimulant; however, at higher doses more like an opioid.   Continue reading ... Your patients are rating you online: How to respond. Manage your online ...

10 tricks to reduce salt (sodium) in your diet
The average adult eats about 3,400 milligrams (mg) of sodium per day — far more than the recommended daily goal of 2,300 mg. Here are the top 10 types of food that account for more than 40% of the sodium we eat each day, along with some ideas for simple swaps to help you eat less salt. 1. Breads and rolls This category tops the list not because bread is especially salty (a slice contains about 100 to 200 mg of sodium), but because we eat so much of it. Smart swaps: Instead of toast or a bagel for breakfast, have a bowl of oatmeal prepared with just a pinch of salt. Bypass the dinner breadbasket for a serving of whole gra...

The Best Sleeping Pill
Choosing the best sleeping pill that will not be ineffective for you will largely depend on your own precise circumstances. The underlying causes will in fact be rather distinct although many cases of sleep deprivation will look much the same in nature with symptoms that may be just about indistinguishable. If the lack of a particular nutrient which the body requires, causes the sleep issue, for one, subsequently no form of treatment apart from the replacement of that nutrient will be effective. You should think before you even consider using any sleeping pills of any other causes which could have been changing your sleep...

Blackened Shrimp with Citrus and Roasted Fennel
It’s been quite a long hiatus from blogging, and I for one am glad it’s over. Nothing special made me stop blogging, just the overwhelming business of life and work. It’s a good life, but one that for the past year or two has lost the balance between work and private life that I seem to have achieved when I was blogging more frequently. At any rate, things in general have settled down a bit and I find myself actually having free time again to write. And so the blog is back! What’s new, you ask? Well, I am about 30 pounds thinner, that’s one big thing.  Nothing magic or amazing, just a food delivery diet that let...

Emotional Detox: 3 Ways to Cleanse Yourself of Stagnated Emotions
Emotional detox is not to rid your body of what you may consider negative emotions, but rather to clear out the ones that have stagnated. Emotions are one of life’s gifts; they offer us a way to experience the full spectrum of what it means to be alive. When we have a healthy relationship to our emotional experience, we can appreciate what each has to offer, from sadness to joy. If you find yourself overreacting to situations or withdrawing, you may want to consider an emotional cleanse. You don’t have to look far to find directions for a cleanse. Generally these are based on cleansing the body; eating clean, taking he...

When the Caregiver Has a Chronic Condition
I’ve lived with chronic migraines since I was 15, due to a P.E. class injury. I know what it is to quickly excuse myself to run to the bathroom and vomit, then return and try to look as though nothing is wrong. I know what it is to reek of different rubs — some herbal, some commercial — in order to function. I know what it is to tell my mother that I was fine even though she could see that my eyes were barely focusing. Even then, most of the time, I did carry on. Read the full article on HealthCentral about how caregivers often provide care even through their own chronic pain: Purchase Minding Our Elders: Careg...

An Example of the Importance of Gut Microbiota to Aging in Flies
If we paint with very broad strokes, we can say that flies generally die from intestinal failure in the same way that humans generally die from cardiovascular failure. For flies, the intestine is at the center of the mechanisms determining the pace and manifestations of aging in that species, and the cause of a majority of deaths. While being far from the only organ to consider in fly aging, it does appear to take center stage. Bear this in mind while looking at the research noted here. All in all, it isn't too surprising to hear that researchers have been able to demonstrate a 60% life extension in flies through a ...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, April 30th 2018
In conclusion, in the Framingham Heart Study population, in the last 30 years, disease duration in persons with dementia has decreased. However, age-adjusted mortality risk has slightly decreased after 1977-1983. Consequences of such trends on dementia prevalence should be investigated. Recent Research on the Benefits of Exercise in Later Life https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2018/04/recent-research-on-the-benefits-of-exercise-in-later-life/ A sizable body of work points to the ability of older individuals to continue to obtain benefits through regular physical activity, and particularly in the case...

Another Example of a Marginal Senolytic Drug Candidate
Today, let us consider what happens when a new area of medical development arises, attracts a great deal of research funding, and then and one or more companies raise even larger amounts of venture funding to take the first therapies to the clinic. This is the case for senolytics, the development of therapies - mostly pharmaceuticals - that can selectively destroy senescent cells. Good evidence for these cells to be a root cause of aging has existed for decades, but it wasn't until 2011 that research and scientific funding institutions were presented with animal study data that they couldn't continue to ignore. The years s...
