Sporadic Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia coli-Associated Pediatric Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome, France, 2012-2021
Emerg Infect Dis. 2023 Oct;29(10):2054-2064. doi: 10.3201/eid2910.230382.ABSTRACTShiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli-associated pediatric hemolytic uremic syndrome (STEC-HUS) remains an important public health risk in France. Cases are primarily sporadic, and geographic heterogeneity has been observed in crude incidence rates. We conducted a retrospective study of 1,255 sporadic pediatric STEC-HUS cases reported during 2012-2021 to describe spatiotemporal dynamics and geographic patterns of higher STEC-HUS risk. Annual case notifications ranged from 109 to 163. Most cases (n = 780 [62%]) were in children <3 years of ...

Measuring ADAMTS-13 activity to diagnose thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura: a novel, fast fiber-optic surface plasmon resonance immunoassay
CONCLUSIONS: A fast ADAMTS-13 activity assay was designed onto automated FO-SPR technology. Optimization resulted in sensitive ADAMTS-13 activity measurements with a detection limit enabling clinical diagnosis of TTP within 3 hours. The FO-SPR assay proved strong correlation with the reference FRETS-VWF73 assay. For the first time, this assay demonstrated the capacity of FO-SPR technology to measure enzymatic activity in pre-clinical context.PMID:37711907 | PMC:PMC10497779 | DOI:10.1016/j.rpth.2023.102171 (Source: Thrombosis and Haemostasis)

Microvascular endothelial activation/dysfunction and dysregulation of the angiopoietin-tie2 system in the pathogenesis of life-threatening infections
Trans Am Clin Climatol Assoc. 2023;133:234-246.ABSTRACTMicrovascular endothelial activation/dysfunction has emerged as an important mechanistic pathophysiological process in the development of morbidity and mortality in life-threatening infections. The angiopoietin-Tie2 system plays an integral role in the regulation of microvascular endothelial integrity. Angiopoietin-1 (Ang-1), produced by platelets and pericytes, is the cognate agonistic ligand for Tie2, promoting endothelial quiescence and inhibiting microvascular leak. Angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2), released from activated endothelial cells in Weibel-Palade bodies, competes ...

Detection of plasma anti-lipopolysaccharide (LPS) antibodies against enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) in asymptomatic kindergarten teachers from Buenos Aires province
Rev Argent Microbiol. 2023 Sep 11:S0325-7541(23)00056-1. doi: 10.1016/j.ram.2023.05.006. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn Argentina, hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) caused by EHEC has the highest incidence in the world. EHEC infection has an endemo-epidemic behavior, causing 20-30% of acute bloody diarrhea syndrome in children under 5 years old. In the period 2016-2020, 272 new cases per year were notified to the National Health Surveillance System. Multiple factors are responsible for HUS incidence in Argentina including person-to-person transmission. In order to detect possible EHEC carriers, we carried out a preliminary...
