Galangal: Boost Your Brain Power and Memory
Of the top 10 causes of death in America, Alzheimer's disease is the only one that can't be prevented, cured or slowed. At least that's what mainstream doctors in the West will tell you… But try telling that to the people of Bali. The galangal root is similar to ginger, but it has a bit more bite. Some people describe it as "piney" or "woodsy." You see, Alzheimer's disease (AD) is extremely rare in Bali. And the majority of people living on Bali who DO have Alzheimer's are expats from the West. Part of the reason why the Balinese don't get AD may lie in one incredible...

10 Foods To Eat For A Bloat-Free Life
By Amy Marturana for Well+Good When bloating, cramping, or heartburn strikes, my brain goes into (WTF) detective mode, calculating every last morsel that passed through my lips and evaluating it after the fact as a potential threat. (CSI, dinner plate edition.) Instead of trying to eliminate everything that might cause an issue, what if you could feel better by adding certain foods? Clinical herbalist Guido Masé prefers this route. Masé, the co-owner of Urban Moonshine--whose organic bitters are designed to get your digestive system in tip-top shape--and author of The Wild Medicine Solution: Healing with Aromatic, Bit...

MIT-Developed Robot Helps Nurses Make Decisions
BOSTON (CBS) – Robots in the operating room are nothing new—but now, a robot named Ginger has been specifically designed to help nurses. Kristen Jerrier works on the Labor and Delivery floor at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. She’s the resource nurse, which pretty much means she’s in charge. “I usually decide which nurse will take that patient, what room they’ll go to and I’m usually talking to the physician about what that patient might need,” she says. Turmeric: Nature ’s Miracle Root for Disease
My friends Lelir and Westi in Bali don’t like to go to doctors. Nature is their pharmacy. You see, Lelir is a Balian. That means “herbal healer.” And Westi’s plantation is bursting with healing plants.  But one plant stands out above all the others. Lelir uses it to make a daily immune-boosting elixir as well as an anti-aging facial scrub. Balians use it as an antibiotic and for liver support. They boil it with milk and sugar to treat the common cold and allergies. Rural doctors make it into a paste with lime to ease sore joints. They make drinks to treat fevers and stomach pain. They mix it wi...

Ginger and chili peppers could work together to lower cancer risk
(American Chemical Society) For many people, there's nothing more satisfying than a hot, spicy meal. But some research has suggested that capsaicin, the compound that gives chili peppers their kick, might cause cancer. Now researchers show in mouse studies that the pungent compound in ginger, 6-ginergol, could counteract capsaicin's potentially harmful effects. In combination with the capsaicin, 6-gingerol could lower the risk of cancer, they say. The study appears in ACS' Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. (Source: EurekAlert! - Biology)

What You Need to Know About Turmeric
Turmeric has gotten some bad press lately due to the recall of certain labels that were contaminated with excessive lead. Recalls are always distressing. They require us to be especially diligent when choosing brands and often make me want to avoid the product altogether. But this is something I would not do in the case of turmeric. There are too many health benefits of this "super spice" to ignore it. A Relative Of The Ginger Root Turmeric, a relative of the ginger root, is most well known as that delightful ingredient which is the secret to any good curry recipe. Until several years ago when I was complaining of cold f...
