Sex- and operation-dependent effects on 5-year weight loss results of bariatric surgery
CONCLUSIONS: Weight loss after bariatric surgery is sex- and procedure-dependent. There is an association suggesting a clinically insignificant difference in weight loss between RYGB and SG among male patients at both the 2- and 5-year postsurgery time points.PMID:38462409 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2024.01.013 (Source: Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases : official journal of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery)

Performance of a predictive weight loss model in terms of rapid detection of inadequate weight loss after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
CONCLUSIONS: The predictive weight loss model of Seyssel et al. enables rapid detection of surgical nonresponse, allowing physicians to react as early as 3 months postsurgery. Patients' overestimation of postoperative weight loss was positively correlated with the actual weight loss achieved.PMID:38461056 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2024.01.020 (Source: Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases : official journal of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery)

Comment on: Performance of a predictive weight loss model in terms of rapid detection of inadequate weight loss after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
In the youthful early years of my surgical practice, I was blinded by the success of my patients. With each postoperative visit, I could relish their triumphs, whether it was another smaller dress size or perhaps some new exercise goal. I gleefully shared their percent excess weight loss with each patient and compared them to the numbers often quoted in the literature. There were the customary exchanges of before and after photos. The patients and I were in a shared honeymoon phase of postprocedural bliss. (Source: Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases)

Bariatric surgery and drugs: Review of the literature and Adverse Drug Reactions analysis in French National Pharmacovigilance Database
CONCLUSION: There is a lack of official information and/or recommendations on medication use in subjects who have undergone bariatric surgery. Apart from under-reporting, ADRs reports remain largely uninformative. Health professional and patients would be awareness for improving, quantitatively and qualitatively the reporting of ADRs in this population.PMID:38458944 | DOI:10.1016/j.therap.2024.02.003 (Source: Therapie)

Vitamin D and the Metabolic Phenotype in Weight Loss After Bariatric Surgery: A Longitudinal Study
ConclusionThis study suggests that VD adequacy and the presence of a healthy phenotype appear to have a positive impact on the reduction of visceral fat in the context of pre- and postoperative obesity. In addition, there was a greater weight reduction in those with VD inadequacy and in MUHO, which suggests that the volumetric dilution effect of VD and catabolism after bariatric surgery is more pronounced in this specific metabolic phenotype.Graphical Abstract (Source: Obesity Surgery)

American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery 2022 estimate of metabolic and bariatric procedures performed in the United States
CONCLUSIONS: There was a 6.5% increase in MBS volume from 2021 to 2022 and a 41% increase from 2020, which demonstrates a recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. SG continues to be the most dominant MBS procedure.PMID:38448343 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2024.01.012 (Source: Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases : official journal of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery)
