Association of Obesity and Bariatric Surgery on Hair Health
Medicina (Kaunas). 2024 Feb 14;60(2):325. doi: 10.3390/medicina60020325.ABSTRACTObesity and obesity-related conditions today constitute a public health problem worldwide. Obesity is an "epidemic" chronic disorder, which is defined by the WHO as normal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. It is also defined for adults as a BMI that is greater than or equal to 30. The most common obesity-related diseases are type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome, chronic kidney disease, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and certain types of cancer. It has been als...

The Management of Biliary Disease in Patients with Severe Obesity Undergoing Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery —An International Expert Survey
ConclusionConcomitant cholecystectomy is preferred by the experts, although evidence in the literature reports an increased complication rate. Prophylactic UDCA should be recommended to every MBS patient, even though the current survey demonstrated that not all experts are recommending it. The preferred approach for treating common bile duct stones is a laparoscopic assisted transgastric ERCP after gastric bypass. The conflicting responses will need more scientific work and clarity in the future.Graphical Abstract (Source: Obesity Surgery)

A New Procedure-Based Assessment of Operative Skills in Gastric Bypass Surgery, Evaluated by Video Fragment Rating
ConclusionThe PBA discriminates well between different levels of operative skills. Similar patterns were found for the OSATS and BOSATS, showing that the randomly selected video fragments are representative samples for assessing skill level. Future research will demonstrate whether these results can be extrapolated to clinical training, and which scores allow for procedure certification.Graphical Abstract (Source: Obesity Surgery)

Hypovitaminosis D and hyperparathyroidism: a five-year postoperative follow-up of 30,458 gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy patients
Bariatric procedures are associated with nutrient deficiencies. Studies show an association between gastric bypass (RYGB) and hypovitaminosis D as well as hyperparathyroidism, yet few compare RYGB to sleeve gastrectomy (SG), and large long-term analyses are scarce. Convincing 10-Year Follow-up Results of the Banded Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
ConclusionThe addition of a silicon ring to the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass may result in substantial and stable weight loss maintenance 10  years post-operative. Furthermore, the number of patients with long-term complications was low and the number of associated medical problems was significantly reduced.Graphical Abstract (Source: Obesity Surgery)

Correlation of T2DM and Anthropometric Measures with Total Small Bowel Length and Its Effects on Diabetes Remission After Bariatric Surgery
ConclusionsTSBL was positively correlated with height, weight, neck circumference, chest circumference, waist circumference, and Roux limb. The TSBL of males was significantly higher than that of females. Among patients with T2DM who participated in the follow-up 1  year after surgery, RL/BPL = 3 (n = 20) had greater weight loss than the other groups.Graphical Abstract (Source: Obesity Surgery)

Long-Term Protective Effects and Mechanisms of Gastric Bypass Surgery on the Kidneys in Hypertensive Obese Rat
ConclusionThis study validates that RYGB effectively attains sustained blood pressure control in hypertensive obese rats and has a potential kidney-protective mechanism via the NLRP3-ASC/IL-1 β pathway.Graphical Abstract (Source: Obesity Surgery)

Fixation of Proximal flange of Lumen Apposing Metal Stent using Through-the-Scope Endoscopic Suturing System to Prevent Stent Migration in Single-Session EUS-directed Transgastric ERCP: A Pilot Study
With the global obesity pandemic, clinical scenarios requiring urgent ERCP in patients with gastric bypass surgery are on the rise and Single-Session Endoscopic Ultrasound-Directed Transgastric Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (SS-EDGE) can effectively address these technical challenges. The aim of this study was to evaluate and describe safe and effective use of through-the-scope endoscopic suturing system for anchoring the lumen apposing metal stents (LAMS) during SS-EDGE. DOACs: A perfect fit for patients with bariatric surgery?
Extreme obesity (defined with a body mass index, BMI, of ≥40 kg/m2) is increasing worldwide, so bariatric surgery frequency is increasing to prevent and treat obesity-related health complications. Direct oral anticoagulant (DOACs), without need of laboratory monitoring, are the preferred treatment for venous thromboembolism (VTE) and atrial fibrillation (AF). Bariatric surgery comprises multiple procedures including adjustable gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy (LSG), Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD/DS).
