Presentation of Wernicke encephalopathy in patient secondary to one anastomosis gastric bypass. Case report and literature review
We present the case of a postoperative patient with a one anastomosis gastric bypass with reoperation undergoing a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass that begins with confusion and nystagmus on her third postoperative day. The diagnosis of Wernicke encephalopathy is made by imaging, and vitamin B1 is administered with total improvement of nystagmus and altered state of consciousness (lethargy, bradypsychia, bradylalia).PMID:38537227 | DOI:10.24875/CIRU.21000706 (Source: Cirugia y Cirujanos)

Intestinal intussusception as a postoperative complication of gastric bypass
We present the case of a 41-year-old female who underwent a laparoscopic gastric bypass 8 years prior to her admission to the emergency room, where she arrived complaining of severe and colicky epigastric abdominal pain. The abdominal computed tomography showed a jejuno-jejunal intussusception, for which the patient underwent urgent exploratory laparotomy with intussusception reduction. Intestinal intussusception is a possible postoperative complication of a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.PMID:38537228 | DOI:10.24875/CIRU.21000795 (Source: Cirugia y Cirujanos)

The effect of bariatric surgery on the expression of gastrointestinal taste receptors: A systematic review
AbstractGastrointestinal nutrient sensing via taste receptors may contribute to weight loss, metabolic improvements, and a reduced preference for sweet and fatty foods following bariatric surgery. This review aimed to investigate the effect of bariatric surgery on the expression of oral and post-oral gastrointestinal taste receptors and associations between taste receptor alterations and clinical outcomes of bariatric surgery. A systematic review was conducted to capture data from both human and animal studies on changes in the expression of taste receptors in oral or post-oral gastrointestinal tissue following any type of...

FXR/Menin-mediated epigenetic regulation of E2F3 expression controls β-cell proliferation and is increased in islets from diabetic GK rats after RYGB
Biochim Biophys Acta Mol Basis Dis. 2024 Mar 24:167136. doi: 10.1016/j.bbadis.2024.167136. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFarnesoid X receptor (FXR) improves the function of islets, especially in the setting of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). Here we investigated how FXR activation regulates β-cell proliferation and explored the potential link between FXR signaling and the menin pathway in controlling E2F3 expression, a key transcription factor for controlling adult β-cell proliferation. Stimulation with the FXR agonist GW4064 or chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) increased E2F3 expression and β-cell proliferation. Consistent...

From database to practice: the MBSAQIP in the surgical literature
CONCLUSIONS: The MBSAQIP is a valuable resource that has generated a wealth of studies in the literature. It has allowed for intense analysis of clinical issues and fostered a culture of safety and quality improvement. Participating surgeons must pledge commitment to extended follow-up periods to maximize its effectiveness.PMID:38531761 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2024.02.007 (Source: Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases : official journal of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery)
