Eur J Intern Med. 2024 Mar 30:S0953-6205(24)00134-1. doi: 10.1016/j.ejim.2024.03.029. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTObesity management guidelines recommend metabolic bariatric surgery for individuals with body mass index (BMI) ≥35 kg/m2, regardless of the presence of any obesity-related comorbidity; and for individuals with BMI 30-34.9 kg/m2 with metabolic diseases. Older age is not in itself a contraindication for bariatric surgeries, which can be performed after careful selection and assessment, to decrease the risks of postoperative complications. An essential amount of data has accumulated about bariatric surgery res...

Patients ’ perspectives on weight recurrence after bariatric surgery: a single-center survey
ConclusionsPatients considered weight loss as the most important factor when choosing treatment modality for WR, with RBS and lifestyle changes being preferred over weight-loss medications. Large prospective randomized trials are needed to counsel this patient population better. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Associations between Zinc Deficiency, Taste Changes, and Salivary Flow Rates following Gastric Bypass and Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgeries
CONCLUSION: Taste change is more prevalent following MGB compared with SG, especially at 6 months postoperation which parallel with changes in zinc levels. More than half of all patients who had undergone bariatric surgery (BS) had low to very low salivary flow rates during the follow-up. This study suggests an association between low zinc levels and reduced salivary flow with hypogeusia following BS.PMID:38550298 | PMC:PMC10977327 | DOI:10.1155/2024/1197571 (Source: Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism)

Changes in fibrin clot properties in patients after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery
CONCLUSION: RYGB surgery led to a decrease in the maximum absorbance of the fibrin clot. Values of maximum absorbance were associated with measures of glycemic control and inflammation. In contrast to previous reports, fibrin clot lysis time was not affected after surgery.PMID:38545128 | PMC:PMC10966290 | DOI:10.1016/j.rpth.2024.102361 (Source: Thrombosis and Haemostasis)

Presentation of Wernicke encephalopathy in patient secondary to one anastomosis gastric bypass. Case report and literature review
We present the case of a postoperative patient with a one anastomosis gastric bypass with reoperation undergoing a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass that begins with confusion and nystagmus on her third postoperative day. The diagnosis of Wernicke encephalopathy is made by imaging, and vitamin B1 is administered with total improvement of nystagmus and altered state of consciousness (lethargy, bradypsychia, bradylalia).PMID:38537227 | DOI:10.24875/CIRU.21000706 (Source: Cirugia y Cirujanos)

Intestinal intussusception as a postoperative complication of gastric bypass
We present the case of a 41-year-old female who underwent a laparoscopic gastric bypass 8 years prior to her admission to the emergency room, where she arrived complaining of severe and colicky epigastric abdominal pain. The abdominal computed tomography showed a jejuno-jejunal intussusception, for which the patient underwent urgent exploratory laparotomy with intussusception reduction. Intestinal intussusception is a possible postoperative complication of a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.PMID:38537228 | DOI:10.24875/CIRU.21000795 (Source: Cirugia y Cirujanos)
