Wheat Belly Holiday Recipes 1
At the start of their Wheat Belly journey, many people resign themselves to a life without gravy, biscuits, or pumpkin pie, having to make the best of holidays devoid of enjoyment and indulgence. Just eat your dry turkey meat and lettuce leaves! It’s not true. You can indeed have all your holiday dishes. But we are going to recreate them without wheat, without other grains, without use of gluten-free junk carbohydrates (no cornstarch, tapioca starch, potato starch, or rice flour), with little to no added sugars, and no other problem ingredients. Minus all the undesirable ingredients, in fact, pumpkin pie, biscuits, a...

What Luis Suarez Can Teach You About Self Development
This may comer as a shock, but self development is all about developing yourself to be the best person you can be. Biting people in front of millions of people worldwide, as the dentally challenged Luis Suarez did this week,  is not good for your self development.  It also has dubious dental benefits as flossing human flesh out from between your teeth is notoriously difficult.. Therefore, do NOT bite people. It’s not big and it’s not clever. I know the Life Coaching purists will be appalled at me telling others what to do, but f. ‘em, seriously, do NOT bite people. Unless you have no reflection, hate garlic...

I am just going to come out and say it, this is one of my BEST recipes yet! Partly because it is actually MY recipe. Creating new, clever and unique foods is not so simple anymore with the plethora of food bloggers out here on the internets. Usually when I think of something to make, I google it and someone else has already done it, and because I am pretty lazy by nature, I just say 'huh, yea, I'll use their recipe'. But not tonight kids, not tonight. I have been looking at make ahead paleo meals that I could freeze and have on hand for quick easy meals during the week and I found a recipe for paleo crockpot meatballs. I w...

Insecticide Poisoning From Aluminum Phosphide and Phosphine
There was a sad story about a woman who died from insecticide poisoning inside her home after family member sprayed agricultural insecticide inside the house earlier in the day. While the story was sad, the back story was quite interesting to me. The poisoning was from aluminum phosphide. When exposed to atmospheric moisture or stomach acid, aluminum phosphate converts to aluminum hydroxide (which is used to treat excess stomach acid) and phosphine gas – which is highly toxic. Phosphine gas typically smells like rotting fish or garlic. Phosphine is explosive and is heavier than air, so it tends to collect in low-lyin...

Lemon-Fennel Chicken with Mushrooms & Scallions
For years, my friend Susan (of the famed Chicken Salad Susan) has been making her Italian grandmother’s sautéed chicken breasts with breadcrumbs, parmesan and fennel.  Not too long ago, she was also on a diet program that included an amazing recipe for pan fried lemon chicken. I decided to combine both her recipes, and now have a killer entree that I’ve made almost weekly since she first shared it with me. LEMON FENNEL CHICKEN WITH MUSHROOMS & SCALLIONS You can just make the chicken breasts, and you’ll have an amazing entree. Or just cut up the chicken breasts, skipping the breading, and have anoth...

Sleep Better with Food and Fitness
Just as sleep is important to our body, what we do with our body in terms of food and exercise plays a major role in the way we sleep (or don’t sleep).  Good nutrition and exercise can help you sleep, but poor sleep leads to poor eating and exercise decisions immediately. A lack of shut-eye is linked with ditching your workout. It’s one thing to skip the workout to get more sleep once in awhile, but if you ditch your workout and cheat yourself of sleep, then you aren’t breaking the cycle. Contrary to what we have all been told, eating prior to bed is not such a bad thing after all.  In fact, a light snack contai...

Baba Ganoush, Lebanese Style
My friend Paula and I threw a Middle Eastern dinner party on my rooftop last Saturday evening. It was really all Paula’s idea. You see,  her dad once ran a Lebanese market in Worcester, Mass. Paula inherited not only her father’s butcher block kitchen table and meat grinder, but a real love for the foods of her ancestors. I can tell you that enthusiasm is highly infectious, having caught it from her last year while sitting at the table at our cottage rolling grape leaves under her tutelage. So when Paula proposed a joint party – she’d provide the food and I, the venue and sous chef duty – I...

Unity Farm Journal - First Week of June 2014
As Spring begins to transform into Summer, everything on the farm is a sea of green. As Paul Simon wrote in 1973 KodachromeThey give us those nice bright colorsThey give us the greens of summersMakes you think all the world'sa sunny dayAll of the guinea fowl are in crazed Summer mating mode, with males chasing females all over the property and communal nests appearing in the forest, with clusters of 30-40 eggs.   On some nights a “designated layer” sits on the nest and sometimes does not survive the prowling foxes, coyotes and fisher cats.    We lost one guinea this week, so we’re down to 27.I’v...

Molly, Spice, and Orange Crush: Slang for Dangerous Drugs
You overhear two girls talking about last night’s concert, when one says to the other “I can’t believe she took 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine!” Oh, wait. That would never happen, right? Probably because “Molly,” the nickname given to MDMA, sounds hip and harmless compared to its actual name—which sounds like what it is, a chemical that you shouldn’t put in your body. Same goes for cathinones, otherwise known as “Ivory Wave,” “Bloom,” “Cloud Nine,” “Lunar Wave,” “Vanilla Sky,” “White Lightning,” and “Scarface” when they are marketed as bath salts—and more recently, as plant ...

Classic Pizza
Yes, you can have pizza in a wheat- and grain-free lifestyle! In previous versions of pizza recipes, we encountered difficulty in creating crusts sturdy enough to be held by hand. While we take every possible chance to bash grains, one thing they do have is gluten that confers the unique stretchy property of dough. We lost that quality when we reject all things wheat and grains. So here we recreate sturdiness with a mixture of meals/flours with shredded cheese melted into the mixture. As you will learn, this creates a crust every bit as good but with none of the adverse health implications. Classic Pizza   Print ...

Broiled Salmon with Mushrooms and Farro – Inspired by Lyfe Chef Art Smith
One of the highlights of my visit to the Medicine X Conference in Palo Alto in September, in addition to my poster presentation and meeting all the amazing e-patients, docs and tech gurus there, was dinner at Lyfe Kitchen. Founded by former McDonalds CEO Mike Roberts, Lyfe (which stands for Love Your Food Everyday) is the first of a growing chain of healthy, pretty fast food franchises that “put sustainability, our planet and our employees first”. As soon as I entered Lyfe, I was hooked. There was a gorgeous live herb garden forming the centerpiece of the place and lending a deliciously fresh scent to the roo...
