Rad51 and Systemic Inflammatory Indicators as Novel Prognostic Markers in Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma
CONCLUSIONS: Our study found a close correlation between elevated Rad51 expression and inflammatory markers. High Rad51 expression, high neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, and low lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio are associated with lower survival rates. The combined assessment of Rad51 and inflammatory markers can be useful for preoperative assessment and prognostic evaluation in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma patients.PMID:38258400 | PMC:PMC10807337 | DOI:10.1177/15330338231216333 (Source: Technology in Cancer Research and Treatment)

Management of Major Complications After Esophagectomy
Esophagectomy remains a procedure with one of the highest complication rates. Given the advances in medical and surgical management of patients and increased patient survival, the number of complications reported has increased. There are different grading systems for complications which vary based on severity or organ system, with the Esophageal Complications Consensus Group unifying them. Management involves conservative intervention and dietary modification to endoscopic interventions and surgical reintervention. Treatment is etiology specific but rehabilitation and patient optimization play a significant role in managin...

Contrast-enhanced CT radiomics features to preoperatively identify differences between tumor and proximal tumor-adjacent and tumor-distant tissues of resectable esophageal squamous cell carcinoma
Esophagectomy is the main treatment for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), and patients with histopathologically negative margins still have a relatively higher recurrence rate. Contrast-enhanced CT (C... (Source: Cancer Imaging)

Impact of intraoperative fluid management on postoperative complications in patients undergoing minimally invasive esophagectomy for esophageal cancer: a retrospective single-center study
Esophagectomy is a high-risk procedure that can involve serious postoperative complications. There has been an increase in the number of minimally invasive esophagectomies (MIEs) being performed. However, the ... (Source: BMC Anesthesiology)

Cost comparison between medicare and private insurance for robotic transhiatal esophagectomy
This study aimed to compare hospital reimbursement after robotic THE for patients with Medicare versus private insurance. With IRB approval, a prospective study of 85 patients from 2012 to 2022 who underwent robotic THE was conducted. Private insurance was defined as coverage excluding Medicare, Medicaid, or self-pay. Statistical analyses involved Student ’st test, Chi-square test, and Fisher ’s exact test, withp ≤ 0.05 considered statistically significant. Data are presented as median (mean ± standard deviation). Among the 85 patients, 64 had Medicare, and 21 had private insurance. Medicare patients exhibit...

Robotic-Assisted Ivor Lewis Esophagectomy
Robotic-assisted surgery is a safe and effective approach to minimally invasive Ivor Lewis esophagectomy. Outcomes are optimized when surgeons are familiar with the fundamentals of minimally invasive surgery of the esophagus and after gaining sufficient experience with robotic surgical techniques. Robot-Assisted-Minimally Invasive-Transhiatal Esophagectomy (RAMI-THE)
The authors review the development and steps of the robotic-assisted minimally invasive transhiatal esophagectomy. Key goals of the robot-assisted approach have been to address some of the concerns raised about the technical challenges with the traditional open transhiatal esophagectomy while keeping most of the steps consistent with the open approach. Robotic assisted minimally invasive esophagectomy versus minimally invasive esophagectomy
ConclusionBy comparing the clinical characteristics and outcomes of RAMIE with MIE, this study verified the feasibility and safety of RAMIE for esophageal cancer. Overall, RAMIE resulted in more complete lymph node clearance, shorter operating time, reduced surgical hemorrhage, reduced postoperative discomfort, and chest drainage alleviation in patients. To investigate the function of RAMIE in esophageal cancer, we propose undertaking a future clinical trial with long-term follow-up to analyze tumor clearance, recurrence, and survival after RAMIE.
