Tackling complex thoracic surgical operations with robotic solutions: a narrative review
CONCLUSIONS: The robotic approach to complex thoracic problems is safe, effective, and associated with improved patient outcomes. To encourage wider adoption of robotic technology, increased training and expanded research efforts are essential, alongside improved worldwide access to this technology.PMID:38505049 | PMC:PMC10944716 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-23-1570 (Source: Journal of Thoracic Disease)

High flow nasal oxygen < em > vs. < /em > conventional oxygen therapy over respiratory oxygenation index after esophagectomy: an observational study
CONCLUSIONS: HFNC improved the ROX index after esophagectomy through significant respiratory rate reduction. This tool should be considered for early respiratory support after extubation in this category of patients, not only as a rescue therapy for ARF, but also to optimize early postoperative respiratory function. Whether this will improve patients' outcomes requires further large randomized controlled trials.PMID:38505084 | PMC:PMC10944724 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-23-1176 (Source: Journal of Thoracic Disease)

Long-term outcomes of robot-assisted versus minimally invasive esophagectomy in patients with thoracic esophageal cancer: a propensity score-matched study
Recently, robot-assisted minimally invasive esophagectomy (RAMIE) has gained popularity worldwide. Some studies have compared the long-term results of RAMIE and minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE). However,... (Source: World Journal of Surgical Oncology)

Longitudinal patient-reported outcomes after minimally invasive McKeown esophagectomy for patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma
ConclusionPatients with ESCC experience reduced health-related QOL and persisting symptoms after minimally invasive McKeown esophagectomy, but a recovery trend was observed within 1  month. The long-term QOL after esophagectomy is acceptable. (Source: Supportive Care in Cancer)

Short-term outcomes of robot-assisted versus conventional minimally invasive esophagectomy for esophageal cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis of 18,187 patients
AbstractThe role of robotic surgery in the curative-intent treatment of esophageal cancer patients is yet to be defined. To compare short-term outcomes between conventional minimally invasive (cMIE) and robot-assisted minimally invasive esophagectomy (RAMIE) in esophageal cancer patients. PubMed, Web of Science and Cochrane Library were systematically searched. The included studies compared short-term outcomes between cMIE and RAMIE. Individual risk of bias was calculated using the MINORS and RoB2 scales. There were no statistically significant differences between RAMIE and cMIE regarding conversion to open procedure, mean...

Thoracoscopic McKeown esophagectomy in a patient with an azygos lobe
The azygos lobe is a relatively rare anatomical variation, and there have been no reports, until date, of thoracoscopic McKeown esophagectomy for esophageal cancer in a patient with an azygos lobe. The azygos ... (Source: Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery)

Is Robotic Surgery the Future for Resectable Esophageal Cancer?: A Systematic Literature Review of Oncological and Clinical Outcomes
CONCLUSIONS: There are numerous reported advantages of robot-assisted surgery for resectable esophageal cancer. A correlation between procedural volume and improvements in outcomes with robotic esophagectomy has also been identified. Multicentre comparative clinical studies are essential to identify the true objective benefit on outcomes compared with conventional surgical approaches before robotic surgery is accepted as standard of practice.PMID:38480565 | DOI:10.1245/s10434-024-15148-5 (Source: Ann Oncol)

Nomogram for predicting pathologic complete response to neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma
ConclusionsFemale, earlier cN stage, duration of nCRT (<  62 days), chemotherapy regimen of taxane plus platinum, pre-nCRT NLR (≥2.199), and pre-nCRT PLR (≥99.302) were significantly associated with a higher pCR in ESCC patients whose primary chemotherapy was a taxane-based regimen for nCRT. A nomogram was developed and internally validated, showi ng good accuracy and consistency. (Source: Cancer Medicine)
