This study showed that centenarians had very specific changes in CD4+ T cell populations, which were manifested by an elevated Th17/Treg ratio in vivo, as well as a changed secretory phenotype. Although the T cells of centenarians cannot resist the aging-related expression of proinflammatory genes, their secretory phenotype was altered, explaining the relatively low level of inflammation in centenarians. These results suggested the presence of a mechanism to ameliorate inflammaging in centenarians. This may be achieved by reversing the imbalance of Th17/Treg cells and reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines. Longevit...

Longevity Conferences Coming up in Late 2022
Conferences are a measure of the health of a field; typically the more conferences one sees, the broader the efforts and the larger the funding. Most of the best conferences relating to aging research, and the longevity industry that has emerged from that research, feature an even mix of entrepreneurs, scientists, and investors. The networking at these conferences leads to the foundation of new ventures and seed funding for young ventures. This is important in a field in which there are many, many opportunities to make progress. Networking makes the world turn; it is an essential part of the messy, human process of bringin...

Say it again:
This study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences finds that, in the context of the Covid 19 pandemic, " a single-payer universal healthcare system would have saved 212,000 lives in 2020 alone. We also calculated that US$105.6 billion of medical expenses associated with COVID-19 hospitalization could have been averted by a Medicare for All system. " This is not exactly news. Health services researchers have been making these sorts of calculations for decades, for as long as I ' ve even been on the periphery of the business, and it always comes out the same. With a universal single payer system we can:I...

In conclusion, long-term cumulative BP was associated with subsequent cognitive decline, dementia risk, and all-cause mortality in cognitively healthy adults aged ≥50 years. Efforts are required to control long-term systolic BP and pulse pressure and to maintain adequate diastolic BP. Cancer Correlates with Increased Risk of Later Onset of Type 2 Diabetes
Researchers here note a correlation between cancer diagnosis and greater risk of later onset of type 2 diabetes. A reasonable guess is that this is mediated by the increased burden of cellular senescence produced by chemotherapy and radiotherapy, though, as the researchers point out, the widely different risks by cancer type may indicate that tumors are metabolically active in ways that specifically promote the metabolic dysfunction that leads to type 2 diabetes. For patients with cancer, prevalent type 2 diabetes at the date of cancer diagnosis is associated with increased cancer-specific and all-cause mortality....

We examined central genetic and environmental lifespan regulators (putative anti-aging interventions, PAAIs; the following PAAIs were examined: mTOR loss-of-function, loss-of-function in growth hormone signaling, dietary restriction) for a possible countering of the signs and symptoms of aging. Importantly, in our study design, we included young treated groups of animals, subjected to PAAIs prior to the onset of detectable age-dependent phenotypic change. In parallel to our studies in mice, we assessed genetic variants for their effects on age-sensitive phenotypes in humans. We observed that, surprisingly, many PAAI...

Evidence Supporting the View that Familial Longevity is Largely Cultural
Researchers have spent a great deal of effort looking for genetic determinants of longevity in long-lived families. Elsewhere, initiatives searching large national databases for genetic determinants of longevity have turned up increasing evidence for genetic variations to play very little role in human life span. The pendulum is swinging towards the idea that the specifics of culture within human lineages are largely responsible for differences in longevity: who stays thin; who exercises; who maintains beneficial dietary habits; who has a lesser early life exposure to persistent pathogens; and so forth. What makes...

Denmark Finds New Ways to Promote Underground Trade
Jeffrey A. SingerIn 1969, Denmark became thefirst country to legalize pictorial and audiovisual pornography, so it is acutely painful to see its government take a new puritanical turn. The Health Ministry has already set the goal of raising the alcohol drinking age from 16 to 18. And last month, Denmark ’s health minister announcedplans to ban the sale of tobacco and nicotine products to anyone born after 2010. This way, the Health Ministry hopes to gradually phase out the use of all tobacco and nicotine products in the country. The Health Ministry took this action to address the 13,600 annual deaths from smoking ‐...

My Recent Podcast on " The Diabetes Way "
A frequent complaint about U.S. prescription drug prices is it is difficult to explain WHY the prices here are so high. A frequent pharma answer to the question WHY is this happening is " it ' s complicated " . They aren ' t kidding. it IS complicated. But today, there are tools on the internet which can help many people navigate the dysfunctional U.S. system without being taken to the cleaners. I recently did a podcast about that which might be worth listening to. But it ' s helpful to understand how I became the guy the podcasters wanted to interview about the subject.Back in September 2021, I was invited as a guest to s...
