Mental and Physical Health in Caregivers of Children with Developmental Disabilities
The purpose of this study was to examine mental and physical health variables in caregivers of children with developmental disabilities (DD) such as cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, autism, myelomeningocele, etc., and compare these to non-caregivers. Providing regular care or assistance to children with chronic disabilities can result in negative health outcomes for the caregiver. This has the potential to negatively impact the child being cared for, including rehabilitation outcomes. (Source: Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation)

Measuring Spontaneous Leg Movement of Infants At-Risk for Cerebral Palsy: Preliminary Findings
To quantify early spontaneous leg movements of infants at-risk for cerebral palsy (CP) during the first four months of life. This will inform future efforts in developing personalized prone and upright rehabilitation for children with CP. (Source: Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation)

Prospective Pain Trajectories Among Children with Cerebral Palsy Undergoing Orthopedic Surgery
Many children with cerebral palsy (CP) undergo multiple orthopedic surgeries, which may improve pain or lead to the development of new pain; yet, prospective research is limited. The purpose of this study was to report pain before and after spine fusion and single-event multilevel orthopedic surgery (SEMLS) in children with CP. Parents completed surveys at 5 time points (pre-surgery and post-surgery: 1, 3, 6, 12 months). Moderate-severe pain was defined as pain intensity of 4/10. Chronic post-surgical pain (CPSP) was defined as new pain that developed after surgery or existing pre-surgical pain that worsened by at least 30...

A Preliminary Investigation of Pain Experience and Mental Health in Children with Cerebral Palsy
Chronic pain is common in children with cerebral palsy (CP); yet little is known about relationships between chronic pain and internalizing disorders in children. The purpose of this preliminary investigation was to examine relationships between chronic pain, pain interference, and mental health in children with CP. The Brief Pain Inventory – Pain Interference Short Form was used to assess pain interference with activities of daily living, the Dalhousie Pain Interview was used to assess chronic pain, and the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey was used to assess mental health factors. The critical need to accelerate cerebral palsy research with consumer engagement, global networks, and adaptive designs
J Pediatr Rehabil Med. 2024;17(1):9-17. doi: 10.3233/PRM-240014.ABSTRACTThe prevalence of cerebral palsy (CP) varies globally, with higher rates and burden of disease in low- and middle-income countries. CP is a lifelong condition with no cure, presenting diverse challenges such as motor impairment, epilepsy, and mental health disorders. Research progress has been made but more is needed, especially given consumer demands for faster advancements and improvements in the scientific evidence base for interventions. This paper explores three strategies to accelerate CP research: consumer engagement, global clinical trial netwo...

Quiet standing and anteroposterior limits of stability in adolescents and young adults with bilateral spastic cerebral palsy
This study aimed to determine the relationships between the positions and postural sway in the QS and anteroposterior LoS in individuals with BSCP. It included 27 adolescents and young adults with BSCP (BSCP group) and 27 adolescents and young adults without disability (control group). The position of center of pressure in the anteroposterior direction (CoPy position) and the path length of center of pressure (CoP path length) during the QS and the anterior and posterior LoS (A-LoS and P-LoS, respectively) were measured using a force platform. The CoPy positions in the A-LoS and P-LoS in the BSCP group were limited compare...
