The Ayounkon project: visual impairment, eye diseases and unmet eye care needs in the Syrian refugee population and the hosting community in Lebanon
ConclusionThe Syrian refugee population and the Lebanese host community have a high prevalence of ophthalmic pathologies and SVI/BL. Visual impairment is more prevalent in the refugee population. Our findings underscore the importance of targeted interventions and access to eye care services for these populations. (Source: International Ophthalmology)

Use of a Novel Beyeonics One Three-dimensional Head-mounted Digital Visualization Platform in Vitreoretinal surgeries
DISCUSSION: The Beyeonics One microscope offers several potential advantages in vitreoretinal surgery, including digital image processing, enhanced depth perception through the 3D HMD platform, and hands-free image control using head gestures. While this study demonstrates the feasibility and safety of the Beyeonics One microscope, addressing limitations related to hazy views and optimizing image quality are crucial for consistent visualization.PMID:38327079 | DOI:10.1177/11206721241229115 (Source: European Journal of Ophthalmology)

Sociodemographic Disparities in Preoperative Visual Acuity and Cataract Surgery Utilization in the San Francisco Bay Area
ConclusionsAfter adjusting for other biomedical  and sociodemographic variables, having Medicaid insurance and being a non-English speaker were the factors most notably associated with reduced cataract surgery utilization and poorer preoperative visual acuity. Health insurance and language barriers, as well as other biomedical and sociodemogr aphic factors, may explain a large proportion of the racial disparities in both cataract surgery utilization and preoperative visual acuity observed among Black and Hispanic patients. Chinese-speaking patients with limited English proficiency are a vulnerable subgroup that exhibi...

Anterior chamber flare and choroidal vascular index as inflammatory markers after uncomplicated phacoemulsification surgery
ConclusionPhacoemulsification causes raises in ACF and CVI due to increased intraocular inflammation. The fact that ACF was significantly higher in postoperative month-1 and CVI returned to its preoperative value suggests that the effect of uncomplicated phacoemulsification surgery on the increase in inflammation in the anterior segment lasts longer than in the posterior segment. These results suggest that ACF and CVI follow-up may be clinically important in the follow-up of postoperative inflammation. (Source: International Ophthalmology)

Aqueous humor protein markers in myopia: a review
ConclusionThe specific mechanism of myopia has not been fully elucidated. Therefore, the means of preventing and treating myopia should focus on inhibiting the degradation of the scleral matrix, promoting the proliferation of scleral collagen fibers, and alleviating chronic inflammation of the eyes. Further research into myopic aqueous humor may provide us with new insights. (Source: International Ophthalmology)

A case report of iridoschisis and cataract: a challenging diagnosis
Conclusions and importanceAlthough iridoschisis has a low incidence rate, it is important to also consider comorbid ocular pathologies when treating iridoschisis patients. Since cataract surgery for these patients is more specialized than for uncomplicated cases, the necessary surgical planning must be paid due diligence. (Source: International Ophthalmology)

Comparative evaluation of iStent versus iStent inject W combined with phacoemulsification in open angle glaucoma
by Shuu Morita, Yoshihito Sakanishi, Ikari Riyu, Satoshi Watanabe, Nobuyuki Ebihara PurposeThe study aimed to compare the 12-month post-operative outcomes of iStent and iStent inject W (inject W), and the factors associated with their success in open-angle glaucoma. MethodsThis single-center, retrospective comparative case series evaluated the medical records of patients who underwent iStent (comprising 1 stent) or inject W (comprising 2 stents) implantation with cataract surgery for primary open-angle glaucoma and normal tension glaucoma between January 2019 and March 2022. The 12-month post-operative efficacy outcomes in...

Subnormal visual acuity after compliant amblyopia therapy: residual/refractory amblyopia or co-existing pathology? - a retrospective analysis
Conclusion: Our study suggests that 5% of children diagnosed with amblyopia might have co-existing/alternate etiology. Most common co-existing etiologies were subclinical optic neuropathy, and OMD. No improvement in BCVA, subtle history and examination findings prompted further workup. Not considering co-existing etiologies was the most common reason for an initial overdiagnosis of amblyopia.PMID:38311572 | DOI:10.1080/09273972.2023.2294997 (Source: Strabismus)

Z-suture scleral fixation intraocular lenses: A refractive and safety report
DISCUSSION: The knotless z-suture technique appears to be a reliable and safe way to fix an intraocular lens in the sclera, regardless of the patient's age. Our results show good visual results and predictable refractive outcomes. Decades of follow-up may be necessary to assess the long-term risk of lens dislocation.PMID:38304925 | DOI:10.1177/11206721241230566 (Source: European Journal of Ophthalmology)
