Short-term effects of ambient gaseous air pollution on blood platelet mitochondrial DNA methylation and myocardial ischemia
CONCLUSIONS: Platelet mtDNA methylation levels are promising biomarkers of short-term exposure to ambient gaseous air pollution, and are likely implicated in the mechanism behind the association of ambient O3 pollution with adverse cardiovascular effects. L-Arg supplementation showed the potential to mitigate the adverse effects of ambient O3 pollution.PMID:38430585 | DOI:10.1016/j.envint.2024.108533 (Source: Environment International)

Delayed neuropsychiatric syndrome after carbon monoxide poisoning
Tidsskr Nor Laegeforen. 2024 Feb 1;144(3). doi: 10.4045/tidsskr.23.0481. Print 2024 Feb 27.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Delayed neuropsychiatric syndrome (DNS) is a well-known complication following carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and develops in up to 50 % of adult survivors. The syndrome is probably immunologically mediated. Common symptoms are slowness, Parkinsonism and cognitive impairment.CASE PRESENTATION: A woman in her forties started to show gradually increasing symptoms of DNS a few days after an episode of severe CO poisoning. She received methylprednisolone 1 g intravenously on 3 consecutive days at around 7 weeks after ...

Agreement between observed and predicted postoperative forced expiratory volume in one second, forced vital capacity, and diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide after anatomic lung resection
CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrated that effort-dependent parameters of lung function including FEV1 and FVC tends to overestimate the amount of lung function loss after anatomic lung resection, clinicians should be cautious in using these measures to determine suitability of surgery based on current established guidelines. However, independent measures such as DLCO demonstrate good agreement suggesting that predicted lung tissue loss is consistent with a 20-segment lung model.PMID:38410582 | PMC:PMC10894373 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-23-1390 (Source: Journal of Thoracic Disease)
