Sunday Sermonette: More Groundhog Day
The story of Chapter 24 -- the repairs to the Temple and the apostasy of Joash after the death of Jehoiada-- is also told in 2 Kings. It ' s basically the same plot but the  text is different in many details, which I assume is just the usual result of repeated copying by hand -- every scribe is also an editor. Jehoiada living to 130 appears to be a regression to the absurd lifepans of the patriarchs in Genesis, but it ' s likely a copying error. Ancient Hebrew had no numerals, letters were used to represent numbers. The letter representing 100, quof, looks like this: ק The letter for 70, ayin, looks like this: ...

Fighting with perfection
Note: I originally wrote this many years ago for another site. It is not available anymore, so I am republishing it. Diabetes is a thing surrounded by numbers. Everything is a number or is used in a calculation. We have blood sugars, units of insulin, and grams of carbohydrates. Then we take those numbers and stick them into more numbers. There is the insulin-to-carb ratio, the duration of insulin action, our correction factor, and more. ...

Wednesday Bible Study; The restoration
Sorry I haven ' t been keeping up my regular blogging lately, it almost seems there is too much to write about. What I plan to do now is post material adapted from the book, although it ' s hard to pull out short enough posts. On another matter, I ' m happy to post comments that take issue with me, but they have to be reasonably coherent and logically respectable. Also, as I have said many times, some people are banned, for good reason. Now, as for today ' s chapter, what happens is that the Levite priests restore the rightful king to power. That is the point of this story, that the legitimacy of the kingdom derives f...

Ray Bradbury and Roald Dahl
David BoazLast week it wasreported that the publishers of Roald Dahl ’s books have been quietly editing to make them presumably more acceptable to modern readers — or at least more acceptable to modern activists. To wit:In “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” for instance, Augustus Gloop is no longer “fat”; he’s “enormous.” And the Oompa Loompas aren’t “small men”; they’re “small people.” While Matilda once went to India with Rudyard Kipling, now she travels to California with John Steinbeck. In “Fantastic Mr. Fox, ” even the chickens’ feelings have been spared; they’re no longer called...

The Ohio Train Derailment, Safety Regulation, and the Historical Improvement in Rail Safety
David Kemp andPeter Van DorenEarlier this month, a Norfolk Southern freight trainderailed in East Palestine, Ohio, causing a large fire, releasing hazardous materials, and prompting emergency crews to conduct a controlled release and burn of toxic vinyl chloride. Fortunately, no lives were lost, but up to two thousand nearby residents were evacuated from their homes for nearly a week, and there are still concerns about pollution. Sober analysis is rarely welcomed after an accident like this. We believe it is worthwhile, however, to illuminate some journalistic errors and place the derailment in the context of increasing fr...

Maintaining Your Well-Being While Changing the World
Many people have gotten more involved in social activism and community work, recently. Seeing the divides in political positions, opportunities, and lived experiences, many of us have declared that we cannot, in good conscience, passively wait for others to make the world a better place. While this work can be rewarding, it can also be hard. Sometimes it’s anxiety-provoking, and sometimes you might feel discouraged about the progress you are (or aren’t) seeing, or about the state of the world in general. There can be feelings of overwhelm, about all that needs doing, and hopelessness about how things are going. You mig...

There Is Something About Trains, Indeed
BY KIM BELLARD Like many of you, when I heard about the Norfolk Southern train derailment in East Palestine (OH) on February 3, my heart went out to the people in that community. The train was carrying some hazardous materials, and no one was quite sure what was vented, especially when officials did a “controlled burn.”  Still, though, I didn’t think much about it; although I live in Ohio, I’m about as far away as one can be within the state. Yesterday my local water company shut off access to water from the Ohio River. “We are taking this preventative step to ensure the health, safety, and confidence ...

Courage is a Dead CurrencyIn this country courage is a dead currencyNo longer a legal tenderAccepted in any reputable storesIts coins and banknotes are counterfeit Try slipping a Canadian quarter In the vending machineAnd nothing happens. No guttural rumbleNo churning of inner gearsNothing falls. The slot remains emptyNo matter how hard you pound the red fa çadeThere ’s nothing we can do to stop itSo many of us have exhausted ourselvesSuffering the years to accumulateNow worthless little mounds of green billsLittle nest eggs to draw onWhen the time came to be brave Some hold on to it, hoping it come...

3D Bioengineered Skin Grafts Fit Complex Anatomy
Researchers at Columbia University’s Irving Medical Center have developed a method to create three-dimensional bioengineered skin grafts. To date, bioengineered skin is typically created in flat sheets. However, these are difficult to fit to complex anatomy, such as the hand, and so these researchers have designed a more sophisticated technique that combines laser scanning, 3D printing, and cell culture to create seamless three dimensional skin grafts. For instance, the researchers have already created a skin “glove” that could be useful in replacing skin on the hands by simply slipping it over the hand (just lik...
