Divergent Genotype of Hepatitis A Virus in Alpacas, Bolivia, 2019
Emerg Infect Dis. 2023 Oct 5;29(12). doi: 10.3201/eid2912.231123. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHepatitis A virus (HAV) is a common human pathogen found exclusively in primates. In a molecular and serologic study of 64 alpacas in Bolivia, we detected RNA of distinct HAV in ≈9% of animals and HAV antibodies in ≈64%. Complete-genome analysis suggests a long association of HAV with alpacas.PMID:37796297 | DOI:10.3201/eid2912.231123 (Source: Emerging Infectious Diseases)

Effectiveness of Essential Oils and Their Components Against Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae)
AbstractPurpose of ReviewChagas disease is a neglected tropical disease caused by the protozoan parasite calledTrypanosoma cruzi affecting 7 –8 million people in the world.Triatoma infestans (Klug) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) is the main vector of Chagas disease in the southern cone of South America. Genetic evidence indicates thatT. infestans originated in the Cochabamba region, Sucre, in Central Bolivia, where there are jungle sites of this species, and from which the domestic species is believed to derive, currently distributed in Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay. Chemical control of the vector by spraying ...

Current Implementation of Quality Measures on American Society for Surgery of the Hand Touching Hands Project Outreach Trips
CONCLUSIONS: Implementation of validated quality measures across surveyed outreach sites is variable, indicating an opportunity for improvement. Standardizing documentation of quality measure implementation for each site, confirming availability of resources, increasing accountability by the visiting teams, and fostering stronger relationships with local health care, may increase quality measure implementation and improve quality health care delivery and patient safety in LMICs.CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Benchmarking the implementation of validated quality measures across hand surgical outreach trips provides an opportunity to im...

Types of Psychiatric Beds and Mental Health Services in 16 Latin American Countries, 1990-2020
CONCLUSIONS: The findings indicate that treatment capacity shifted from inpatient to outpatient and community care. Most countries had a bed shortage for acute psychiatric care, especially for children and adolescents and forensic patients. More comprehensive and standardized mental health service registries are needed.PMID:37644830 | DOI:10.1176/appi.ps.20220590 (Source: Psychiatric Services)

Metapopulation dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 transmission in a small-scale Amazonian society
PLoS Biol. 2023 Aug 22;21(8):e3002108. doi: 10.1371/journal.pbio.3002108. eCollection 2023 Aug.ABSTRACTThe severity of infectious disease outbreaks is governed by patterns of human contact, which vary by geography, social organization, mobility, access to technology and healthcare, economic development, and culture. Whereas globalized societies and urban centers exhibit characteristics that can heighten vulnerability to pandemics, small-scale subsistence societies occupying remote, rural areas may be buffered. Accordingly, voluntary collective isolation has been proposed as one strategy to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 ...
