Do improvements in infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices endure the test of time?
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that entertainment-education interventions are a promising model for improving and maintaining IYCF knowledge. However, their ability to sustain more permanent changes in IYCF practices is less certain. Further evidence is needed to identify other avenues for producing long-term, sustainable behavior change, especially among indigenous populations in Latin America, where literature on education and behavior-change interventions related to IYCF practices is limited.PMID:38580998 | DOI:10.1186/s41043-024-00507-5 (Source: Journal of Health, Population, and Nutrition)

Pediatric neurosurgical medulloblastoma outcomes in La Paz, Bolivia: How a Lower Middle-Income Country (LMIC) institution in South America compares to the United States
ConclusionsPediatric neurosurgical medulloblastoma outcomes at the Children ’s Hospital of La Paz, Bolivia are significantly inferior to that of a generalized US experience. Future research is required to identify institution- and country-specific initiatives to improve discrepancies between institutions in LMICs in South America compared to HICs. Surviving birth at high altitude
J Physiol. 2024 Mar 23. doi: 10.1113/JP284554. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis Symposium Review examines challenges to surviving birth and infancy at high altitudes. Chronic exposure to the environmental hypoxia of high altitudes increases the incidence of maternal vascular disorders of pregnancy characterized by placental insufficiency, restricted fetal growth and preterm delivery, and impairs pulmonary vascular health during infancy. While each condition independently contributes to excess morbidity and mortality in early life, evidence indicates vascular disorders of pregnancy and infantile pulmonary vascular dysfunc...

Prevalence of Maternal Chagas Disease and Vertical Transmission Rates in Bolivia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2024 Mar 5:tpmd230579. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.23-0579. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBolivia has one of the highest burdens of Chagas disease in the world. Vertical transmission from mother to infant accounts for a growing number of cases. We performed a systematic review of articles assessing the prevalence of Chagas disease in pregnant women and rates of vertical transmission to infants in Bolivia. Studies were not excluded based on year of publication or language. Random-effects analyses were performed to estimate a pooled prevalence of maternal Chagas disease and pooled vertical transmission rate. Our se...

IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 305: Human Pesticide Exposure in Bolivia: A Scoping Review of Current Knowledge, Future Challenges and Research Needs
rado
Numerous studies have shown that pesticide exposure is linked to adverse health outcomes. Nevertheless, in Bolivia, where there is an increasing use of pesticides, the literature is sparse. To address knowledge gaps and guide future research in Bolivia, we conducted a scoping review spanning 22 years (January 2000 to December 2022). Our search identified 39 peer-reviewed articles, 27 reports/documents on Bolivian regulations, and 12 other documents. Most studies focused on farmers and revealed high pesticide exposure levels, assessed through biomarkers of exposure, susceptibility, and effect. The literature explor...

Comparative evaluation of lateral flow assays to diagnose chronic < i > Trypanosoma cruzi < /i > infection in Bolivia
by Ronald L ópez, Andrea García, José Jorge Chura Aruni, Victor Balboa, Andrea Rodríguez, Berra Erkosar, Aurélie Kamoun, Marcelo Rodriguez, Evelin Fortun, Laura C. Bohorquez
Bolivia has the highest incidence of Chagas disease (CD) worldwide. Caused by the parasiteTrypanasoma cruzi, CD is generally a chronic condition. Diagnosis is logistically and financially challenging, requiring at least two different laboratory-based serological tests. Many CD cases are missed; in Bolivia it is estimated just 6% of individuals chronically infected withT.cruzi get diagnosed. Achieving control on the way to elimination of CD requir...

Digital health and the promise of equity in maternity care: A mixed methods multi-country assessment on the use of information and communication technologies in healthcare facilities in Latin America and the Caribbean
CONCLUSION: Digital health for maternity care provision relied on commonly available technology and did not necessitate highly sophisticated systems, making it a sustainable and replicable strategy. However, disparities in access to digital health remain and many facilities in rural and remote areas lacked connectivity. Use of ICTs in maternity care depended on countries' long-term commitments to achieving universal health and digital coverage.PMID:38412170 | PMC:PMC10898739 | DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0298902 (Source: Rural Remote Health)
