'Modest' Elevated Risk With Clarithromycin Plus Some Statins 'Modest' Elevated Risk With Clarithromycin Plus Some Statins
It was seen for the antibiotic with statins not metabolized via cytochrome P450 3A4, researchers say. Though small, the added risk may be important in practice given how often the drugs are combined. Heartwire (Source: Medscape Cardiology Headlines)

Clarithromycin-statin mix can cause drug interactions, requiring hospitalization
The combination of the common antibiotic clarithromycin with some statins increases the risk of adverse events, which may require hospital admission for older people, according to a new study. Statins, used to lower cholesterol, are one of the most widely prescribed drugs, with projections estimated at more than 1 billion people around the globe. Although uncommon, severe adverse events can occur in some patients when certain medications interact with the statin and affect the way it is metabolized. (Source: ScienceDaily Headlines)

Common antibiotic linked to 'tiny' rise in heart deaths
Conclusion The conclusion that the risk of cardiac death during the use of clarithromycin is 76% higher than that for penicillin V was based on a small number of cardiac deaths. In fact, it occurred during 0.01% of prescriptions of clarithromycin, compared with 0.005% during prescriptions for penicillin V. A death rate just a bit higher than a very small death rate is still very small. This means that from an individual point of view, the risk of cardiac death from taking either antibiotic is minimal. This study does not prove clarithromycin caused any cardiac deaths. It only showed a very small increased risk of card...
