Learner Perspectives on the Learner Handover Process
On this episode of the Academic Medicine Podcast, Tammy Shaw, MD, MMed, and Research in Medical Education (RIME) Committee member Arianne Teherani, PhD, join host Toni Gallo to discuss new research into learner perspectives on the learner handover process. They discuss the role of trust in this process, the potential for bias, the purpose of handovers vs. how they’re perceived by learners, and recommendations for making handovers safer and more effective. Profile of a New Health Data Exchange Company healthKERI
When someone confronts potentially fatal health issues in their life, it’s always interesting to see how they react and what they do after that experience.  That’s why I had to sit down with Jared Jeffery, Founder at healthKERI, to learn more about his pathway to starting his new health data exchange company. For those not familiar with Jeffery, I first got to know him when he was working at KLAS and he was an active member of our Swaay.Health marketing community.  Unfortunately, a few years ago Jeffery had a health scare which landed him in the hospital with a diagnosis that seemed to give him only months to...

Armchair diagnosis
I used to think it was a slowly progressive form of frontotemporal dementia, rather than Alzheimer ' s disease, but now I ' m starting to suspect that the frontotemporal dementia and severe personality disorder are indeed complicated by Alzheimer ' s,and that the rate of progression is increasing. I don ' t have anything to add to that personally, the guy has clearly lost his marbles. Not that he ever had a full bag. What is disturbing is that the cultists applaud and cheer uproariously for his incoherent ranting, and even completely incomprehensible, unintelligible passages accompanied by bizarre gestures and sounds....

A New FHIR Analytics Tool from SAS Health
Most data about patients exists in EHRs or other repositories in a variety of legacy formats. Analytics, though, requires you to compare apples and apples. Thus, SAS Health Solutions offers a common data model, ingesting data from disparate sources of FHIR data into the appropriate fields for analysis.  Plus, once collected, that data can easily leverage the full suite of SAS analytics tools. Gail Stephens, VP, Health and Life Sciences, explains the uses for SAS Health in this video, her goal being to “get patients to better health, more quickly.” For instance, a clinician can look across a cohort of patients ...

A Look at Nabla Copilot ’ s Automatic Clinical Documentation
Regular readers know that I think ambient clinical voice is one of the most exciting things to happen in health IT since the $36 billion in EHR stimulus money.  The promise of automatic note generation is so beautiful and would solve so many of the pains associated with EHR software and more generally clinical documentation.  Of course, there are plenty of skeptics that say that the technology won’t get there or will be too expensive.  Time will tell on both of those, but when you look how quickly technology and AI are moving, my bet’s that ambient clinical voice will be a huge success. As such, that’s...

Altman, Ive, and AI
BY KIM BELLARD Earlier this year I urged that we Throw Away That Phone, arguing that the era of the smartphone should be over and that we should get on to the next big thing.  Now, I don’t have any reason to think that either Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and Jony Ive, formerly and famously of Apple and now head of design firm LoveFrom, read my article but apparently they have the same idea.   Last week The Information and then Financial Times reported that OpenAi and LoveFrom are “in advanced talks” to form a venture in order to build the “iPhone of artificial intelligence.”  Softbank may fund the venture ...

MeldRx Is Making Healthcare App Development and FHIR Data Access Easy
When someone wants to create a healthcare app, they often think that getting the data they need to make their app work will be easy.  They assume that there must be some easy EHR API they can tap into that will provide them with the data access they need.  Or maybe they hear about this new more modern FHIR standard that will give them access to that data.  Once they dive into the details associated with accessing health data from the EHR, they realize there is a whole lot more to it than most expect. This is at least part of the problem that Darena Solutions saw when they talked with healthcare application developers. ...

Not All Prescription Management and Clinical Decision Support Are Created Equal
When I first discovered Synapse Medicine, I was fascinated by the depth of work they had done to handle prescriptions and clinical decision support in their system.  Since their system was and is being broadly used in France, they were able to see and work on all the problems associated with medication management and discover the solutions that worked across a wide swath of patients and environments.  Needless to say, there’s more to prescription management and medication decision support than you would expect at first glance. This is why I was excited to sit down with Clement Goehrs, MD-PhD, CEO & Co-Founder ...

ELLKAY Selected as CommonWell ’ s New Technical Service Provider
One of the biggest networks for sharing health data in the country is CommonWell Health Alliance.  After some changes in the industry and some acquisitions, CommonWell was in need of a new technical service provider to continue their interoperability work and to finish their work to become a QHIN under TEFCA.  After a thorough evaluation process, CommonWell just announced the selection of ELLKAY as their new technical service provider. How Could Digital Technology Make An Impact On Primary Care?
I truly hope that very soon I do not have to make an appointment at the GP when I suspect signs of a disease, but my GP will send me a message that she spotted something irregular in my latest test results and my digital health data, so I’d better visit. Let me show you in detail how primary care should be carried out in the future! Digital health should become an organic part of primary care in the future I live a fairly healthy life. I use data to improve my lifestyle and to make better decisions by optimising my sleep pattern, my physical, my cognitive or my emotional abilities; and I had several genetic tests....

CyncHealth Optimizes Health Data Sharing to Enhance the Patient Experience
As health data sharing continues to evolve, the mere collection of patient data is no longer sufficient; it’s imperative that the data collected have tangible value for overburdened clinicians increasingly being requested to gather more data. Scott Alderman, Vice President of Operations at CyncHealth, wants to provide one-stop access to the longitudinal patient record, while reducing the clicks needed to navigate the electronic health record (EHR). As a former CIO, Alderman has a unique perspective on this data sharing challenge and the value CyncHealth can provide to healthcare organizations and patients. CyncHealt...

Xealth: Connecting Hospitals and Health Systems to Patient Apps and Health Information
Accelerated innovation is affecting health care in several ways. For instance, it’s increasingly important to offer services and monitoring to patients in the home, because those interventions are key to managing chronic conditions as well as rehabilitation after surgery or other medical procedures. Furthermore, a wealth of home-based solutions are being offered by a range of IT companies.  Xealth boosts the clinicians’ ability to take advantage of remote digital therapeutics. The SMART-on-FHIR open platform allows clinicians to offer third-party apps in a standard manner. Xealth makes it easy to add apps to a...
