Hospitals Outside of US Investing in Portals and Digital Front Door According to Latest KLAS Report
The KLAS Research report on Global Patient Engagement 2024 found that healthcare organizations outside the US are investing in patient portals, digital front door experiences (self-scheduling and self check-in) and virtual care/patient monitoring. Healthcare IT Today sat down with Everton Santos, Vice President of International at KLAS Research to hear his insights on this report. “What we found is that patients in those regions are hungry for an online platform where they can see, not only their lab results, but also their medical history, schedule an appointment, check-in for an appointment, and pay their bills,” exp...

A Look at the Hospital Room of the Future at Tampa General Hospital
When healthcare staff approach a hospital room, it’s important to know basic things about the patient like their preferred language, whether they’re in isolation, or whether they’re not supposed to eat (an NPO order). Traditionally, these facts are handled through physical markers or even buried in the patient record. The “digital white board” and “digital door sign” technologies from eVideon display the necessary information automatically where it’s clearly visible and provide a look into what the hospital room of the future looks like powered by technology. Amy Bender, Info...

Dealing with the Elephant in the Waiting Room – Clipboards and Paper Forms
I recently had a visit to the doctor’s office for a routine procedure.  I kid you not that I was asked to complete essentially the same forms 3 different times.  Two times electronically and once on paper.  The staff assured me that the forms were asking different questions.  I frustratingly assured them that 95% of the questions were the same.  It was an awful experience for me as a patient and no doubt for them to have to review 3 different sets of forms.  While not every office is this disorganized, the patient experience when it comes to clipboards and patient forms has a lot to be desired at many healthcar...

Helping Clinicians Gain More Control Over Their Time
For Rishi Sarna, MD, Chief Clinical Officer at Backline, communication is central. He points out that communications have lagged behind everything else in medicine, and are holding back progress in patient care and the physician experience.  In the video interview below, we sat down with Dr. Sarna and Jackie Rice, VP and CIO at Frederick Health, to discuss these challenges and Frederick Health’s work with the Backline team to address them. Dr. Sarna admitted that, traditionally, doctors have routinely sent photos over unprotected message channels to get consultations. This was a violation of HIPAA, but the doctors o...

Connecting Healthcare Clouds and Simplifying Solutions in a Secure Way
Healthcare cloud solutions have become much more sophisticated, reliable, and easier to connect. Gone are the days of a single cloud instance that can support all your needs.  However, managing the various cloud options can be challenging if you don’t have a thoughtful approach to it and work with great partners. More Poli-sci
This post will be in two parts -- or maybe I ' ll just get to one part now and do the second part separately, we ' ll see how it goes. The first part is some empirical true facts about elections and electoral democracies, or republics if you prefer to use that term for representative systems such as ours. I don ' t want to get hung up on vocabulary. The second is philosophical -- how should we understand democracy, popular rule, We The People? How does that work and how can it work and how should it work? So, Part One. Many people assume that elections and the resulting legislative and executive (and in some states, judicia...

The Quiet Hospital Unit and Other Benefits of an Open and Interoperable Communication Platform
Anyone who has been on a hospital ward, whether as clinician, patient, or visitor, has noticed the continual din of beeps and chirps—it can drive you crazy. It’s notable that one of the simple ways Rauland‘s communication system improves the hospital experience is to reduce noise by routing alerts quietly to the person who needs to handle them. Another key benefit of using Rauland, according to Director of Product Management Joseph DeLisle, is that it checks the content of a call or alert and directs it to the right person. For instance, if the patient is just asking for a pillow, the call goes to a technicia...
