Current treatment landscape for obesity in Singapore
Singapore Med J. 2023 Mar;64(3):172-181. doi: 10.4103/singaporemedj.SMJ-2022-216.ABSTRACTThe rising prevalence of obesity in Singapore is a harbinger for a corresponding increase in obesity-related complications such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and coronary heart disease. Obesity is a complex disease driven by multiple factors, and hence, treatment cannot follow a 'one-size-fits-all' approach. Lifestyle modifications involving dietary interventions, physical activity and behavioural changes remain the cornerstone of obesity management. However, similar to other chronic diseases such as T2DM and hypertension, lifesty...

Estimated minimum prices and lowest available national prices for antiobesity medications: Improving affordability and access to treatment
CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that certain weight loss treatments can be manufactured and sold profitably at low costs, but prices currently range widely between countries, limiting access for those in need.PMID:36815242 | DOI:10.1002/oby.23725 (Source: Obesity)

Impact on Cardiovascular Health of Using Phentermine/Topiramate in Combination With Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy in Super Obesity
Management of patients with BMI ≥50 kg/m2 is challenging. In previous work, pre and postoperative pharmacotherapy with phentermine/topiramate plus laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (PT + SG) promoted greater weight loss than sleeve gastrectomy (SG) alone at 24 mo postoperatively. This current secondary analysis studied the im pact of PT + SG on blood pressure (BP), heart rate, and antihypertensive usage. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Pharmacologic management of weight regain following bariatric surgery
While bariatric surgery restults in significant long-term weight loss for most patients with obesity, post-surgical weight gain affects a considerable percentage of patients to varying degrees of severity. Furthermore, a small but significant percentage of patients experience inadequate post-surgical weight loss. Although many studies have examined the role of anti-obesity medications to address post-operative weight regain, an evidence-based consensus has not yet been achieved because of the heterogeneity of populations studied and the studies themselves. Observational studies in the post-bariatric surgery population cons...

Real-World Experience of the Efficacy and Safety of Phentermine Use in Adolescents: A Case Series
Conclusions: Phentermine monotherapy is an effective and safe means for weight loss in pediatric patients when combined with lifestyle interventions. Twenty-one of 30 (70%) patients achieved at least a 5% decrease in %BMIp95 within a mean duration of treatment of 10 months. We noted no severe adverse events.PMID:36576420 | DOI:10.1089/chi.2022.0147 (Source: Childhood Obesity)

Topiramate Utilization After Phentermine/Topiramate Approval for Obesity Management: Risk Minimization in the Era of Drug Repurposing
ConclusionPhentermine/topiramate approval was associated with increased topiramate use among patients with obesity. Prescribers are encouraged to enhance patient education and monitoring in such clinical use since topiramate prescribing information, compared with REMS for phentermine/topiramate, has less emphasis on preventing prenatal exposure.
