Appendecular actinomycosis: A case series of 14 patients
CONCLUSION: Ileocecal and appendecular actinomycosis are rare, and preoperative diagnosis is difficult. A definitive diagnosis is usually made after a histopathological examination. After surgery, long-term antimicrobial treatment of the patient is possible with penicillin.PMID:38570296 | DOI:10.1016/j.medcli.2024.02.005 (Source: Medicina Clinica)

Case Report: Pericardial Actinomycosis in a 79-Year-Old Man with Poor Dental Hygiene
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2024 Jan 30:tpmd230618. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.23-0618. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTActinomycosis is an uncommon infection caused by Actinomyces species, and the diagnosis is often challenging owing to low prevalence and diverse clinical manifestations. Pericardial involvement of actinomycosis is particularly rare. Here, we present a case of a 79-year-old man who initially complained of exertional dyspnea, orthopnea, and decreased urine amount. There was no fever, chest pain, or productive cough. Physical examination was remarkable for decreased breath sounds at the left lower lung field. Poor dental hygie...

Imaging findings in inflammatory disease of the genital organs
AbstractThis review focuses on inflammatory diseases of female and male genital organs and discusses their epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, and imaging findings. The female section covers pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) primarily caused by sexually transmitted infections (STIs) that affect the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. Unusual causes such as actinomycosis and tuberculosis have also been explored. The male section delves into infections affecting the vas deferens, epididymis, testes, prostate, and seminal vesicles. Uncommon causes such as tuberculosis, and Zinner syndrome have also been discu...

Acute Pulmonary Actinomycosis Induced by Immunotherapy and Chemotherapy Used for SCLC Treatment: A Case Report and Literature Review
Infect Drug Resist. 2023 Dec 11;16:7575-7580. doi: 10.2147/IDR.S429699. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTA 66-year-old male patient diagnosed with small-cell lung cancer received chemotherapy and immunotherapy, resulting in successful tumor control. However, the patient subsequently experienced a fever and rapid progression of the pulmonary cavity. Despite sampling bronchoscopic bronchoalveolar lavage fluid for targeted next-generation sequencing (tNGS), the cause remained unidentified. Adding bronchoalveolar lavage fluid to sense metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) confirmed the infection caused by actinomycetes. The pa...

COVID-19-associated mucormycosis - "The Black fungus" with associated invasive aspergillosis and actinomycosis infection: Series of 5 cases in the Indian scenario
Indian J Pathol Microbiol. 2023 Oct-Dec;66(4):823-828. doi: 10.4103/ijpm.ijpm_507_22.ABSTRACTCOVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 has been studied and reported widely since November 2019, after its first case was detected in Wuhan, China. It has proven to be a fatal disease worldwide. COVID-19 causes severe disease in patients with immunosuppression and has always been associated with high mortality in such patients. Immunocompromised patients are always at a higher risk of getting co-infections too, and the same is true with COVID-19. It predisposes to the development of many fungal infections of which, mucormycosis is one of th...
