Unmasked immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome towards B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma during treatment of esophageal actinomycosis in a patient with advanced HIV: a case report
CONCLUSION: Esophageal actinomycosis in people living with HIV is very rare. We suggest HIV-associated immunosuppression is not enough to allow for actinomycosis to develop, and masked underlying entities should be sought. The existence of such entities in people living with HIV should raise awareness of the possibility of unmasked immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome once treatment has started.PMID:37452343 | DOI:10.1186/s12981-023-00526-y (Source: AIDS Research and Therapy)

Unmasked immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome towards B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma during treatment of esophageal actinomycosis in a patient with advanced HIV: a case report
Actinomycosis is an unusual chronic bacterial infection, even rarer in people living with HIV. It is not considered an AIDS-defining disease. However, the role in co-presentation or overlap with other opportun... (Source: AIDS Research and Therapy)

[18F]FDG PET/CT Findings of Mass-Forming Actinomycosis in an Uncontrolled Diabetic Patient
We report a case of cervicofacial actinomycosis mimicking malignant sarcoma in a 78-year-old man with diabetes. High lesion uptake and decreased cerebral uptake on [18F]FDG PET/CT provide a potentially important diagnostic clue suggesting infectious disease in a poorly controlled diabetic patient. Lingual Actinomycosis Clinically Simulating Nodular Median Rhomboid Glossitis: Literature Review and Report of Additional Case
AbstractActinomycosis is an uncommon, subacute to chronic, suppurative bacterial infection caused by Actinomyces Israelii. About 3% of all actinomycosis cases occur in the tongue, often affecting adult patients (mean age, 50 years). The clinical characteristics of actinomycosis can resemble malignant or benign tumors, and other infectious diseases. A 56-year-old woman was referred presenting an ulcerated lesion on the tongue 1 year ago. Intraoral examination revealed an edematous nodular lesion with an ulcerated surface, slightly symptomatic, on the midline dorsum of posterior tongue, suggesting nodular median rhomboid glo...

The Great Imitator: Cervicofacial Actinomycosis Masquerading as Cancer Recurrence
AbstractCervicofacial actinomycosis being one of the unusual infections is of high relevance to a head and neck onco-surgeon. As the diagnosis may be made difficult by its nature to mimic malignancy and egregiously low culture sensitivity, the differential diagnosis for a lesion appearing to be malignant after irradiation does not usually include actinomycotic infection. Treatment usually requires a long-term antibiotic course after confirmation with histopathology, albeit surgical debridement is required in selective cases. Here we report two cases that were clinico-radiologically diagnosed as osteoradionecrosis and histo...

Leave No Stone Unturned: A Case of an Actinomyces Rhinolith Presenting With Chronic Cough and Throat Pain
Ear Nose Throat J. 2023 Apr 17:1455613231170603. doi: 10.1177/01455613231170603. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTActinomycosis infection in the nasal cavity, especially an actinomyces rhinolith, is extremely rare. It should be considered in cases where a heterogenous calcified mass is found within the nasal cavity on endoscopy and radiographically. Treatment includes surgical debridement and a prolonged course of antibiotics, unique from the more typically encountered fungus ball. This case highlights the broad differential for chronic cough and throat pain and the importance of considering sinonasal contributions to throat ...
