Is tacrolimus by any generic name as sweet?

“What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet1.” Though Shakespeare, no doubt, did not have generic immunosuppression in mind, one can ask a somewhat analogous question regarding equivalence of generic immunosuppression agents to those marketed under the bra nd name. This question was addressed by The International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation in 20092, around the time generic tacrolimus became available. That document reviewed the process for generic approval, as well as special considerations that may impact medication pharmacokinetics, including dietary interactions, concomitant medication interactions, and metabolism in children.
