Ketogenic diet treatment of children in the intensive care unit: Safety, tolerability, and effectiveness
The ketogenic diet (KD) is a high fat, adequate protein, and very low carbohydrate medical diet which is a well-established intervention for treatment-resistant epilepsy in children [1] and adults [2]. There are now an expanding number of case series that describe KD effectiveness in super-refractory status epilepticus (SRSE), defined as a seizure that continues after at least 24 h of continuous anesthetic infusion [3], and which is associated with high neurologic morbidity [4,5] and mortality [6].
