Patterns of signs, symptoms and laboratory values associated with Zika, dengue and undefined acute illnesses in a dengue endemic region: secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study in southern M éxico

Dengue and Zika viruses are both positive-sense, single stranded RNA viruses belonging to the Flaviviridae family. They have similar genetic sequences, transmission cycle, ecological niches and overlapping clinical manifestations (Gould and Salomon, 2008). Dengue virus, the causative agent of dengue, was re-introduced to the Americas a few decades ago, established endemically, and currently circulates in annual peaks (Brathwaite et al., 2012). Zika virus, the causative agent of Zika, was recently introduced to the Americas causing an outbreak of pandemic proportions (Nugent et al., 2017); and attracted special attention due to its association with Zika Congenital Syndrome and Guillain-Barr é Syndrome (Krauer et al., 2017).
