Role of oxidative stress-related biomarkers in heart failure: galectin 3, α1-antitrypsin and LOX-1: new therapeutic perspective?

In conclusion, α1-antitrypsin and lectin-like oxidized low-density-lipoprotein receptor-1 seem to represent two good markers in HF and therapeutic targets, whereas galectin-3 does not. PMID: 31782085 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

AbstractHeart diseases are a major cause of morbidity and mortality world-wide. Lysyl oxidase (LOX) and related LOX-like (LOXL) isoforms play a vital role in remodelling the extracellular matrix (ECM). The LOX family controls ECM formation by cross-linking collagen and elastin chains. LOX/LOXL proteins are copper-dependent amine oxidases that catalyse the oxidation of lysine, causing cross-linking between the lysine moieties of lysine-rich proteins. Dynamic changes in LOX and LOXL protein-expression occur in a variety of cardiac pathologies; these changes are believed to be central to the associated tissue-fibrosis. An awa...

In conclusion, the present study demonstrated that TIGIT is a prominent negative immune regulator involved in immunosenescence. This novel finding is highly significant, as targeting TIGIT might be an effective strategy to improve the immune response and decrease age-related comorbidities. GENDER-ASSOCIATED DIFFERENCES IN ACUTE HEART FAILURE PATIENTS PRESENTING TO EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT. Acta Clin Croat. 2015 Sep;54(3):257-65 Authors: Potočnjak I, Bodrožić-Džakić T, Šmit I, Trbušić M, Milošević M, Degoricija V Abstract Little is known about gender-associated differences in characteristics and survival of acute heart failure patients. The increasing incidence calls for investigating the possibilities of improved management. The purpose of the study was to determine gender-associated differences among emergency department acute heart failure patients in order to i...

Tolvaptan, a vasopressin receptor antagonist, inhibits water reabsorption in the renal collecting ducts. Tolvaptan has been found to be highly effective in treating overhydration leading to heart failure. Subjects of the current study were 42 patients taking tolvaptan after hospital discharge. Subjects consisted of 10 patients with valvular heart disease, 9 with atrial fibrillation, 8 with dilated cardiomyopathy, 6 with overhydration, 4 with old myocardial infarction, 3 with hypertension, and 2 with some other condition (mean age: 76.3 years).
