Natural active constituents of Bufo bufo gargarizans cantor: A review on pharmacological activity, toxicity and quality control

ConclusionsAccumulating reports suggested that the bioactive extracts (e.g., Huachansu) and bufadienolide monomers (including bufalin, gamabufotalin, bufotalin, cinobufagin, resibufogenin and arenobufagin) isolated from Chanpi or Chansu could be promising drug candidates for cancer patients due to their potent and broad-spectrum of anti-tumor activity. However, it is crucial to elucidate in-depth molecular mechanisms, structure-activity relationships and potential side-effects of active constituents derived from BBGC. Meanwhile, to ensure the effectiveness and safety of the clinical medication, future studies should undoubtedly have the priority to clarify the effective substances and toxic compositions in Chansu and Chanpi, and then conduct a quantitative analysis of these indicators to construct a comprehensive quality evaluation model.Graphical abstract
