Survivors of childhood brain tumors experience lasting cognitive and socioeconomic burdens

(Wiley) Survivors of childhood brain tumors who received radiotherapy and were very young at the time of diagnosis may experience cognitive and socioeconomic burdens decades after treatment, according to a study published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society. Interventions such as cognitive therapies and educational and occupational services may be needed to mitigate such long-term effects.

As a highly aggressive pediatric brainstem tumor, diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) accounts for 10% to 20% of childhood brain tumors. CONCLUSIONS: On brain MR imaging, these patients have both highly characteristic intra-axial tumors (typically multifocal high-grade gliomas) and nonspecific findings, some of which might represent early stages of neoplastic transformation. In this study, we characterized the role of ERBB4 during cerebellum development and medulloblastoma progression paying particular interests to its role in CGNPs and medulloblastoma stem cells (MBSCs). Our results show that ERBB4 is expressed in the CGNPs during cerebellum development where it plays a critical role in migration, apoptosis and differentiation.
