Aortic Aneurysms and Fluoroquinolones: Is There a Link and Does it Matter in the Perioperative Period?

In the past 10 years, the safety of fluoroquinolone antibiotics has been under scrutiny in medical literature. To date, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a number of warnings about the risks of fluoroquinolones and their potential to cause a number of complications, including peripheral neuropathy, tendinitis, and tendon rupture. In December, 2018, the FDA issued a new alert suggesting that fluoroquinolones can increase the occurrence of aortic aneurysms and aortic dissections.
