Growing evidence indicates that hypertension, which is one of the major modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease, is established in early life [1] and is increasingly becoming a problem in the developed world [2]. The recent global obesity epidemic has led to an increase in hypertension in children [3]. Similarly to adult hypertension, childhood hypertension is typically asymptomatic but is capable of producing pathophysiological changes that promote atherosclerosis [4], and this disease tracks from childhood into adult life [5].
