Emergency department visits and unplanned hospitalizations in the treatment period for head and neck cancer patients treated with curative intent: A population-based analysis

With the epidemic rise in the incidence of head and neck cancers, particularly HPV-related oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma [1,2], and a growing elderly population which is more susceptible to head and neck cancers [2], more patients will require treatment in an already strained healthcare environment. Since the Institute of Medicine ‘Quality Chiasm’ report in 2001 many health care systems are dedicated to a process of ongoing quality improvement and to close the performance gap in areas where current state and ideal care are wide [3–5].
