Expression of miR-373 and its predicted target genes E-cadherin and CD44 in patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

Expression of miR-373 and its predicted target genes E-cadherin and CD44 in patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Cell Mol Biol (Noisy-le-grand). 2017 Dec 30;63(12):29-33 Authors: Timirci-Kahraman Ö, Verim A, Farooqi AA, Turan S, Özkan-Küçük NE, Yaylim İ Abstract Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) is a genomically complex disease that is difficult to target, and efforts have been made to identify new treatment strategies and   molecular markers that might stratify patients and individualize options for treatment. miR-373 has diametrically opposed roles in different stages and types of cancers. miR-373 has been suggested to quantitatively control E-cadherin and CD44 expression. We studied the expression of miR-373, E-cadherin and CD44 in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and evaluated the association between the disease and clinical characteristics of patients. Tumor tissues were collected from 24 laryngeal cancer patients. Adjacent normal tissue samples were also obtained as controls. After RNA isolation, we assessed the miR-373, E-cadherin and CD44 levels. As endogenous controls, we used the small RNA U6 and GAPDH TaqMan® to normalize the levels of expression of miR-373, E-cadherin and CD44. The fold change in the expression of the genes in larynx tumor and control tissues was calculated using the 2-ΔΔCT method. miR-373 was significantly upregulated in seventeen tumor samples compared...

Authors: Aires FT, Dedivitis RA, Kulcsar MAV, Ramos DM, Cernea CR Abstract SUMMARY: The role of systemic inflammatory response as a prognostic factor has been proposed in a variety of cancers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prognostic value of the pretreatment neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in the incidence of pharyngocutaneous fistula (PCF) in patients who underwent total laryngectomy. We conducted a retrospective cohort analysis of 141 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of larynx who underwent total laryngectomy from 2009 to 2015. The incidence of PCF was 49.6%. A higher risk of 23% was...

Knockdown of the prolyl isomerase Pin1 inhibits Hep-2 cells growth, migration and invasion by targeting β-catenin signaling pathway. Biochem Cell Biol. 2018 May 16;: Authors: Fan G, Wang L, Xu J, Jiang P, Wang W, Huang Y, Lv M, Liu S Abstract Increasing evidence indicates that peptidylprolyl cis/trans isomerase, NIMA-interacting 1 (Pin1) plays a decisive role in a variety of cancers. Nevertheless, its function in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) has not been elaborated. The aim of this study is to determine the role of Pin1 in LSCC. Here, we established stably transfected Hep-2 cells with...

In this issue ofJAMA Otolaryngology —Head&Neck Surgery, Li et al shows that human papillomavirus –positive squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) may be associated with improved overall survival not only in the oropharynx but also possibly in the upper aerodigestive tract subsites—oral cavity, larynx, and hypopharynx. This finding is persuasive given the large sample size used, which was obtained fr om the National Cancer Database (NCDB), and the multivariate analysis performed. Previous studies with smaller sample sizes have similarly suggested the favorable prognostic role of HPV in cancer in nonoropharyngea...

ConclusionsThe data suggest that tumor stage and nicotine exposure seem to have the highest impact on survival in hypopharyngeal and laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma patients. There is no evidence for a better survival for p16 positive or HPV positive patients with hypopharyngeal or laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. HPV seems to play a minor role in these entities of head and neck carcinoma.

AbstractHead and neck cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world, accounting for up to 30 –40% malignancies in India. Research is always on the lookout for parameters that help in early diagnosis of such disease and to explore the possibility of discovering such parameters that would assist in management of the disease by its potential to predict and prognosticate the disease. To estim ate serum ADA levels and to correlate with response to therapy and also to correlate between different clinical stages and serum ADA levels and to correlate HPV status to response to therapy. A prospective cohort study. 30 p...

We would like to thank Dr Sezin Yuce Sari and his colleagues for their interest and comments on our recent publication on Clinical Target Volume (CTV) delineation for primary Head&Neck squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx and larynx [1]. To avoid any misunderstanding and/or misinterpretation of our recent guidelines, we would like to reply point by point to their criticism.

We read the article entitled ‘Delineation of the primary tumour Clinical Target Volumes (CTV-P) in laryngeal, hypopharyngeal, oropharyngeal and oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma: AIRO, CACA, DAHANCA, EORTC, GEORCC, GORTEC, HKNPCSG, HNCIG, IAG-KHT, LPRHHT, NCIC CTG, NCRI, NRG Oncology, PHNS, SBRT, SOMERA, SRO, SSHNO, TROG co nsensus guidelines’ with great interest [1]. There was a lack of a guideline for the delineation of the primary tumor in head and neck cancer. This paper might shed light on the accurate delineation the clinical target volume (CTV).

Conclusion Réunion Island features some particularities in terms of incidence: women are less than half as likely as in Metropolitan France to develop any type of cancer, whereas incidence in males is among highest in France. The presentation of results in cancer registries could be improved in line with everyday practice in head and neck surgery.
