Low-dose X-ray exposure does not harm human stem cells

(Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology) Mesenchymal stem cells are being explored for a wide range of diseases, such as cardiovascular, autoimmune and cancer diseases. There is a pressing need to characterize these cells' responses to low-dose diagnostic medical irradiations and the research addresses that need. Researchers also hope that in the long-lasting heated debate about linear-no-threshold vs. threshold hypothesis in the area of radiation protection, their results speak in favor of the former and will eventually help to establish evidence-based radioprotection standards in regenerative medicine.
